Welcome to Park Hill Flats Sheffield - one of Britain’s most famous, controversial and iconic housing estates. In this video, we explore the full story of Park Hill Flats, from its ambitious post-war beginnings and brutalist “streets in the sky” design, to decades of decline, crime, abandonment and the huge regeneration project transforming the estate today.
Walking through the entire Park Hill estate, we take a look at the old derelict blocks, abandoned walkways, ongoing construction work and the newly renovated colourful apartments that now overlook Sheffield city centre. Once considered the future of social housing in the UK, Park Hill later became a symbol of urban decay before being reborn as one of Britain’s biggest regeneration projects.
Originally built in the late 1950s and inspired by modernist architecture, Park Hill was once seen as a revolutionary vision for working-class housing. But over time, economic decline, unemployment and neglect caused large parts of the estate to deteriorate. Today, massive redevelopment efforts are transforming sections of Park Hill into modern apartments, businesses and creative spaces - while other parts still remain boarded up and abandoned.
