I got to know Blake through the Red Dragon movie. I was captivated by those paintings.

I am more familiar with Blake's poetry, but his paintings are the definition of haunting. If there ever was a man who peeked through the curtain of the universe, it was him

I don't understand why, but my emotional responses to Blake's paintings are indescribably potent. This man was surely tapped into something profound.

Blake was one of those special complex geniuses that was in a class all on his own.

I see people posting their favorite fluffy bits of poetry but Blake had far more interesting things to say. He wrote 2 collections, the song of innocence & the song of experience, in the 1st he wrote The Divine Image which is optimistic but in the 2nd he wrote A Divine Image which is sadly more accurate-

And Jealousy a Human Face
Terror the Human Form Divine
And Secrecy, the Human Dress

The Human Dress, is forged Iron
The Human Form, a fiery Forge.
The Human Face, a Furnace seal'd

My favorite fluffy bit of Blake's poetry is, "The road to Excess leads to the Palace of Wisdom"

I love Blake, but some of his work reminds me of an old Gahan Wilson cartoon that I saw way back in the day, maybe in "The New Yorker". An artist has set up his easel outdoors, in front of a beautiful landscape with majestic mountains in the background. But his canvas is filled with hideous monsters, demons and gargoyles. When someone asks him about this, he replies, "I just paint what I see." 🙂

Dead Man by Jim Jaramusch starring Johnny Depp brings William Blake to life in a magical way.

Blake and Poe genuinely changed my perception of literature and art in ways I cannot fully describe - because I still don't fully understand how, I'm still searching for those answers decades later, and I'm thankful to them both for putting those questions in my head.

This app is insidious. Even speaking the name of a film near my phone, and a video pops up with it.
