“Shall we play a game?” 💻☢️

In this video, I’m reacting to WarGames (1983) for the first time — and I honestly loved this movie. What surprised me most is how relevant it still feels today. The tech is retro, but the ideas? Still terrifyingly current.

Starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, WarGames follows a teenage hacker who accidentally taps into a military supercomputer and sets off a chain reaction that could trigger nuclear war. It’s suspenseful, smart, funny in places, and packed with that classic 80's vibe... but underneath it all is a message about automation, escalation, and humans trusting systems they don’t fully understand.

The scenes at the high school were actually shot at El Segundo high school, in California. The real Snohomish High School, outside Seattle, is a thoroughly modern building that doesn't look anything like that. The scenes at the computer lab with his friend Jim, were, however, actually filmed at the University of Washington in Seattle, in front of the Undergraduate Library, and inside Seig Hall, the computer building.
Notice the actor who played the bald-headed security person ("No sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.") That's the high-school principle in "Back to the Future."

This was damn close to real. Tech older. Attitude truth. Scary as hell. Even now. I grew up under this threat. Caused me to be an IT security expert. Xero has changed. That was Cheyenne Mountain Complex. NORAD is real and originally based there. That 10 ton door was real. And yes. They did control most nuclear missile squads from there. It is all relevant right now.

As a kid of the 70s who was lucky enough to have a PC and a acoustic coupler... I immediately understood this movie when it came out. All these years later and a long successful career in cyber security, this is more relevant today than you realize.

I'm 51 and I watched this in the 80s and it still terrifies me.

My dad took me to see Wargames and Superman III as a drive in double feature. I was five.

12:10 - The loud laughing in the background is the camera crew - they hadn't heard the joke.

Love that statement “I’ll piss on a spark plug if it do any good”

I’ve been buttering my corn with bread for a very long time because of this movie. Works great. Then you eat some buttered bread.

33:45 "Foul!" - I think the stuff with his secretary was leftovers from a subplot which they cut, they had a thing together. But I like the small random things throughout the movie ("This corn is raw!")

There were 84 million homes in america in 1983. Only 2 million of those homes had a personal computer. People were starting to adopt this new-ish technoIogy as the american economy improved in 1983. I never had one growing up in the 1980's. My friend's dad had one. We would play pacman on that thing for hours.

The arcade era in the 80s was such a fun time to grow up in. 😀

Scared the shit outta me and my computer classmates. We did program all the Joshua lines into our IBM PC/1 and Trash-80s. Lol. All done with BASIC and COBOL.

This movie was exactly like how it was in 1983. After seeing this, I always butter my corn on the cob that way. Great show! ❤️

44:20 "My god! This guy's always eating!"

He's dipping chewing tobacco, not eating food. I mean, you could technically eat it but you would become incredibly ill or possibly even die.

Back in the 80s, most of the people I knew with mopeds were girls. I don't remember seeing any moped rider with a helmet. Bicycle riders didn't wear them, and mopeds were kind of looked upon as just a bicycle you didn't have to pedal.

@18:08 What he's running isn't just a movie gimmick. That's what was known as a "war dialer" which was used to systematically dial every phone number within a range you specified to try to find other computers with modem access. I know this because back in the day when my family had a Commodore 64 we would use one to find BBSs (Bulletin Board Systems). The numbers were not always published so it was difficult to find them if you didn't have a source for access numbers.
