Michelangelo's masterpiece, The Pieta, depicts Mary cradling the mortal body of Jesus after the Descent off the Cross.
This is the starting point for this fascinating talk in which Prof. Ishay Rosen Zvi of Tel Aviv University interviews Prof. Israel Knohl of the Hebrew University, around Prof Knohl's book The Messiah Confrontation: Pharisees versus Sadducees and the Death of Jesus.
Prof. Knohl describes an historical continuum of messianic expectations and tension building in the last centuries of the first millennium BCE in Judah and its surrounding based on deep examination of early sources such as The Dead Sea Scrolls and The Gospel of Mark.
Prof. Knohl also stresses the abandonment and loneliness of Jesus, contrary to the image portrayed in the Pieta, as central and essential to his messianic theology.
