To Catch a Predator was the biggest franchise in true crime television until a sting in Murphy, Texas spiraled into one of reality TV's darkest disasters. This is the story behind the show's most unexpected catch, and how it ultimately ended the show’s long-standing reputation as “the good guys” on TV. These are the facts of the story that inspired “Primetime,” A24’s movie starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen.

Some people criticize the way To Catch A Predator operated. Do you think it was worth it?

@AmeliaBedelia626 7 days ago

As someone who was approached by multiple men and manipulated by years starting at 12 I agree with Hansen. The predator is dead and not able to hurt anyone else. I call that a win.

A predator offing himself? Seems like a gift to humanity to me.

The guy shot himself because he was ashamed and didn't want to go to prison. He saved the taxpayers money and justice was done. I say the world is now a safer place for kids. Too bad the show ended.

Chris Hansen just worked with my local PD in Maryland and caught several predators in the community. It was shocking and disgusting.

The U.S. legal system put an end to a show exposing child predators. What a surprise. 😒

This is so gross. They're treating it like this man was an innocent victim that was killed by the police. They shouldn't have rushed things but the outcome would have been the same. Because you can't send predators to prison just to be a predator yourself. He knew damn well he would have died in there

A predator taking their own life and ridding society of the abuse they would undoubtedly inflict upon a child seems like a pretty good outcome to me. If I was Chris, I would be sleeping just fine as well.

The real crime is that there are so many loopholes in sexually based offenses.

I met Chris on an elevator in Denver at CrimeCon. He was so friendly and posed in a pic with me. I appreciate what he does and I believe he has saved thousands of children from these disgusting perverts. What a great contribution to humanity ❤

it was 100% worth it and the fact it became too dangerous for those in power, proves it was effective. it leveraged the most important flaw in the pred armour, their impulse control. All they needed even when on notice of traps playing on live TV, all they needed was a target and access and they'd coming running

Yeah I’m 100% with Chris. It’s unfortunate that those stings were done with more preparation but as for the prosecutor who took his own life… Good. That’s harsh but he was supposed to be a man his community could trust and count on to keep children safe and he ended up being no better than the predators he spent his career going after. I was sa’d on and off for the first ten years of my life and I’m now a mom of two amazing children who I fear for every day. If the show did nothing else but expose online child predators than it was a success to me.

That man ended himself because he knew what he had done was wrong. The justice system does not prosecute this because they are the PREDATORS

@ThisIsLifeYall 7 days ago

Even if you don’t like his approach. it highlights how police won’t take action on this topic, without some kind of public pressure. Whether it be positive, negative, or a little of both?

@seanking1775 5 days ago

The most annoying complaint about Hansen is his conviction rate. Let’s be clear: LE has limited resources (and didn’t even bother doing child predator stings before Hansen popularized it) and wouldn’t have even bothered investigated 98% of the guys Hansen went after. He could have a 10% conviction rate and he still would be doing better than the cops.

@prairiepennyproductions 7 days ago

I bet today's Congress wouldn't be praising it. How many of its members could be the subject?

@cabbage9798 4 days ago

Killing yourself instead of getting arrested just testifies to his guilt. Innocent men don’t shoot themself instead of being detained. His crimes where most likely far worst then they knew.

@Yui714 3 days ago

Ending yourself because of the crimes you committed isn't the fault of the people who caught you committing that crime.

@IceNfire1828 7 days ago

I don’t understand why that horrible man’s death negatively effected anyone. He deserved what he got.

@QCoraA 7 days ago

I understand the people who were children at the time feeling horrible about what happened, but adults who understand what predators are fully should have no remorse. The guy dug his own grave, and was nice enough to put himself in it.
