I'm 60yo, and played usually two rounds a week in my 20's. I consistently shot mid 70's to low 80's. Now I get out maybe 3 to 4 times a season and can shoot anywhere from 78 to 105. Not practicing with intent makes a huge difference in performance. I'm just happy to know that a golfer of James's ability can have the same flaws as anyone else.
Well done for having the nuts to make a video like this James. Even with the access you have to clubs the answer 99% of the time is money is better spent on lessons with a good instructor
I empathise completely . I’ve spent 2-3 years not feeling right, and tbh, feeling like your swing now looks. You can tell something has changed over the last 12 months, James. Pleased to see you do such an open and honest video.
We all need lessons from time to time. After many years not playing my scores were around 90. Got lessons which gave me th direction for improvement. I now shoot 72-78 most days but I still go back to my instructor to ensure I am not getting sloppy
There is a lot of Golf YouTube content I am burnt out on...
But I will ALWAYS enjoy seeing you or anyone invest in themselves and documenting something care about.
I personally think that your technical side of your game has been cleaning up nicely over the last few years. Obviously its slipped a bit, but that happens to all of us. It's cool to see you still striving to get better.
When I was a kid, I was always told that practice makes perfect. More recently I have been told use it or lose it. This is the evidence that was correct. We can’t just turn up and play great golf, no matter how well trained you once were. And I now realise that when they say lose it, they mean my golf ball…. Great to see how calm and direct Gary teaches. He doesn’t even use the monitor or the video, he has just seen it. Monitor and video are to proof to James he is correct😄
Jack Nicklaus famously stated that he knows whether or not he will hit a shot perfectly by the time the club has moved the first 12 to 18 inches into the backswing. Keep hammering!!!
I lost my driver swing over last winter after training irons to near exclusion...When I finally I picked up the driver and missed the ball entirely....I had to completely rework my driver swing over the next 6 months..Went back to a 12 degree driver at mid stance and nuetral no heat swing, hitting 180 - 220 yards, finding the compensations that worked, then slowly draw the compensations back out a tiny bit at a time while moving the ball forward a tiny bit over those 6 months. I just this week was able to start putting the heat back on and I just broke 300 yards again yesterday. It's not a great feeling to have to go through that. A long comment just to say I completely empathize.
I thought James' review of the McLaren series 1 mb iron was awesome...and his videos are actuakky very interesting...his tutorial video on swing fundamentals with Pete Cowan as this is here is really fascinating. Would love to play a round with James...bet you'd learn so much.
