Nobody is knocking on my door and telling me that Alexander the Great is angry about how I live my life, that he's going to send me to eternal conscious torment if I don't straighten up. These dimwits anger me.
Love when people bring up Josephus when talking about Jesus. Their reaction when I tell them Josephus was born nearly a decade after Jesus died is always priceless.
I have realized, at some point in my life, that religionists and apologists will exaggerate, distort, and even lie to encourage people to believe their particular "truth."
Alexander not only had historians within his campaign recording his exploits, but the events surrounding his campaigns were also recorded, orally and otherwise, by people that fought against and/or were conquered by the Macedonians: particularly in Persia and India. To say that there are "*FIVE*" sources on Alexander is such a shallow take that even mosquito larvae wouldn't survive in it.
As someone who grew up in religious south. Then went militaristic atheist. And then leveled out.
Its so much easier to answer stuff with humility of "i dont know." And so much easier to morally balance when "its not my fault. But it is my responsibility" mentality vs "the guy in the sky is telling me something" playing a game of connect the theological dots. Which humans will do with everything, thats what we do even with meaningless unconnected dots, we connect them. Once ya realize its just programming and you'll do it with mundane and theology alike, makes it easier to disconnect from the perceived importance and ask legit "does this make sense?"
When I was a Christian, I took many Christians arguments as granted. Later I found out those arguments were laughed at by secular scholars and only circulated among Christians as true. I felt betrayed.
But also, despite the relative paucity of documentary evidence for the life of Jesus of Nazareth, very few people actually doubt that he existed. It's just that we don't really buy all the impossible stuff written a hundred years later.
