It's always an honor to have a video essay dedicated to my game, and this one in particular is very good.
The analysis regarding misogyny seemed quite interesting to me, and I'm struck by how ignored it is in other analyses or discussions about the game. I really liked your interpretation of the game and the way you research the topics; I hope to see more of your work in the future. Have a nice day :)

P.S.: I apologize for the pain and torment caused by my poor handling of the level design. I hope to redeem myself in the future.

Love it when people talk about games like these with care, instead of shouting and calling it "THE MOST INSANE GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED" or "ILLEGAL GAME!!!", thank you very much for this video and breakdown of the game.

the protagonist's hatred so high, the valley's become pink due to them going postal

small addition from a native spanish speaker, at 59:56 , "Ella" is likely not the name as it isnt very common in hispanic countries, as the word "Ella" translates to "Her" in english, also "Tilin" is more than likely a bit by the developer, as it is a meme/joke name in hispanic communities and never actually used as a name, its like if the file name was "Scrimblo", for example, amazing video as always meadow!!!

The clown dinosaurs seem to be some kinda corrupted escapism.
In the video, the dino was the one positive thing in a terrible childhood before doing a fucked up version of The Neverending Story where he killed the abusive environment, brutally, in front of the kid, unglamourizing the revenge/rescue fantasy.
In the game, Tilin rescues kids from the clown dinosaurs, which is a rescuer fantasy as opposed to fantasizing about being rescued.
Idk what's the exact throughline, but it seems relevant.

There’s something about Vamvilodon’s use of this specific shade of pink that intrigues me. Just looking at it for a moment fills me with feelings of revulsion, frustration, and detachment. The longer I stare, the more uncomfortable I get.

I like to think minono eats the mini protag because its destroying the traumatic memories and replacing it with happy ones. Hence why he's always smiling

About the misogyny part. I have got the idea, that the reason why Tailon depicts women that way, was because most of the abuse from his childhood came from his mother, and the father was more of an "absent" type (Hence why we don't see him on family photos).

thank you so much for bringing up the misogynistic side of tilín's psyche, when i played i found odd how much it framed anything female as scary or wishing to hurt you in some way, i wish i was more media literate when i played it back then, thank you so much for putting into words what i couldn't

I'm so glad I finally find someone who explains and speculates about what this game means. And also talks about the themes of violence particularly towards women, something that a ton of people gloss over or don't talk about at all.

So. I think Tilyn fantasised about killing his ex in spite of both of them separating for their benefit. I think before his dog died he was initially sad about it, but then his dog dying pushed him over the edge and he begun to mentally deteriorate, having all these evil thoughts and fantasies about destroying everybody and then himself. He despised people who were happy because he was jealous that he couldn't have that happiness for himself.

I think being stuck in that town where everything happened and having all these horrid hallucinations and dreams was destroying Tilyn from the inside-out. In the bad end he kills himself and joins his not-actually-dead-ex, in the good end after experiencing these horrifying visions he decides to pack up and leave before he does something he regrets.

Rather controversially, I don't think Tilyn is an evil person because alongside making people suffer there's a lot of imagery that suggests self-loathing, as if he hates the evil thoughts he's having and sees himself as a monster. I think the grief of loss over his ex and his dog were destroying him mentally and he didn't know what to do about it, until he has a series of graphic dreams, gets up and goes outside for some air, dissociates terribly and wanders around all these places not actually doing harm. And when he snaps back to reality and sees the sky a burning pink, he either realises he needs to leave his town to move on or it's all too much to bear and he kills himself.

honestly I like to think as "THEWAYAHEADFEELSLONELY" to be the canon ending. He leaves his old life and all that baggage behind to start a new. The way ahead might feel lonely, but he'll push on nevertheless.

When I streamed this to my friends one of the things we all noticed was how there was an oddly large number of female enemies in roles they wouldn't normally be so heavily represented in(cops, soldiers, etc...) and couldn't help but tie it into Tilin's fear of women(probably not helped by his traumatic past causing a feedback loop of bad experiences -> fear -> bad experiences)

what an amazing mod, I am so glad I played it so none of them ever have to do the maze levels lol

@defmagica9139 2 months ago

This is a fantastic breakdown.
I kind of wish i didnt spoil it by your vid.
The very clear tone of misogny brought upon by the forced societal destruction of ones own emotions leading to a path of seeing different others as an enemy out to hurt you really resonated with me.
I used to feel this way after my own trauma of an abusive mother.
Ill be thinking of this for a while, even if i feel as though ive healed personally.

Excellent video that really helped me to delve deeper into Tilin’s mind, understanding his trauma and turmoil, what causes him to see himself as a monster. If Act 1 truly did not happen, then we can only hope that in the good ending, he is leaving to seek mental help and hopefully heal himself from his trauma, learning how to break out of the toxic masculinity mindset, and overall become the best version of himself.

As someone who experiences depression, I too have been developing a similar game. I have funneled a lot of my pain into crafting the story. although the development itself has been excruciatingly slow because of my emotions eating away at my work ethic which has ultimately put the game on the back-burner for now until sort it out and further increase my skill set in order to make the game the way i envision. I love these types of games, they really help alleviate some of the mental turmoil. I especially love postal 1, its the biggest inspiration for my game along with horror films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House of 1000 Corpses. The atmosphere and aesthetics really scratches an itch that tugs at what little emotion I have left. Its kinda funny that the same mental turmoil that these types of games help with has hindered my progress in being motivated to make my own. Thank you for the amazing video as always and showing me this really cool game. 🧡

Finally, a video that takes it more seriously except "it bad cuz violent and edgy".

Thank you, a lot of us self-insert as Tilin due to our struggles with anger, hate, resentment that was born from sadness, grief, and hating myself. I've been hateful, I've done some things I am not proud of, but I did heal, even if not fully, I don't think it's possible to fully heal. I made my amends, and I try to leave peacefully. Games, art, anything that shows how bad it can get remind me of how much of my humanity I've regained, after it's been ripped out and spat on before I could even understand what's happening to me.

I think that's why a lot of those horrible "Literally Me" characters are so popular. People see a part of themselves in them, and can see what letting that part run rampant can cause. It's sad how most people perceive it though "just edgy" "people that like it are freaks". It kinda hurts.
