Every guard uses your legs to create structure and control space, but where you put your legs changes how that guard works. In this video, I break down inside guard vs outside guard, what each type is naturally good at, and how this framework can help you choose which guards to develop.

Outside guards can create strong defensive barriers, funnel your opponent into predictable paths, and give you more room for error. Inside guards give you better access to your opponent's center of gravity, making sweeps and transitions into leg entanglements easier—but often requiring more active maintenance.

Instead of memorizing dozens of BJJ guards as unrelated positions, understanding inside and outside position gives you a framework for choosing, attacking, defending, and transitioning between them.
