Just realized I called Sandy from Grease “Sandra Dee” the whole time. Fell for the Rizzo propaganda.

It’s weird how female liberation keeps being pushed in a way that benefits men.

It’s always been so bizarre to me that “owning” your sexuality equals having sex. You can own your sexuality while not having sex too. If that’s what you want. “Owning” one’s sexuality should be about making choices for yourself that you are comfortable with. Whatever those choices happen to be.

in a world where women have been over sexualized for thousands of words, making feminism and empowerment about even more sexualization is insane

there really is a key and peele sketch for everything, huh

I think we should also remember that sexual liberation and promiscuity is extremely messy for teenagers because they're still children. They are exploring their sexuality to the extremes instead of through slow, romantic relationships with their peers.

Watching this made me realize why tv shows and movies are normalizing teenagers being sexual. LIKE THEY ARE CHILDREN and sometimes in these shows and movies the teenagers are doing IT with adults it just never makes sense to me

another issue i see is that if having lots of sex is the only way to be sexually liberated then that would imply that people who are asexual or just don't want sex are completely excluded

Weirdly enough it's one of those few things Glee got right. Emma wanted to own her sexuality by sleeping with Will, but backs out last minutes. She's upset with herself but he assured her that by deciding she didn't want to she was, in fact, owning her sexuality.

My thing is, why does "sexual liberation" always equal having sex? There are different manifestations of owning your sexuality. You could persist about using condoms, you could invest in birth control, you could masturbate, you could write smutty fanfiction, you could draw NSFW fanart, you could ERP in fandoms that have adults in them, you could relearn sex ed to ensure your safety, you could dress a certain way in private for yourself, you could relearn your anatomy from the perspective that this body of yours was only "ugly" because the porn industry and social media portrayed it as such and gradually learn to love your body, you could communicate your yes and no's to partners, etc. Like, there is so much more to sexuality beyond sexual pleasure and virginity. It's more psychological than people make it out to be!

People really do need to stop caring so much about how much people have sex, just let people be!!!

I grew up surrounded by classmates who believed that being sexually active from the age of 13 or 14 made them more interesting and popular. I saw how 18-year-olds and even older guys took advantage of that. Throughout my teenage years, I was ostracized for not having sex or using drugs, but I don't regret a thing. I'll never understand how being promiscuous is liberating, because you end up being tied to how men perceive you, and your worth is measured by how many guys you've slept with.

While it seems laughable that the intelligent, attractive Emma Stone could EVER be perceived as awkward, it makes sense that Olive herself felt invisible, as she'd never done anything to get noticed before the events of the movie.

Sandy changing her appearance for Danny at the end was supposed to subvert 50's coming of age films, wherein the bad boy changes his ways thanks to the love of a good girl. But while Danny also changes for Sandy, he didn't seem to be worth all of that effort, and cared more about what his buddies thought, when their opinion shouldn't even matter. They didn't last too long, in my book.

Personally, sex positivity isn’t about having as much sex as possible. It’s about doing what you want with your body and not shaming other people’s choices. That includes having casual sex AND being celibate. I don’t believe we should encourage kids and teens to be promiscuous but I don’t think schools should enforce abstinence because it’s been proven that that doesn’t work.

This unnecessarry and excessive importance put on “virginity” and the belittlment of it is exactly why one of my friends went through the exact same thing that Cat character goes through. The entire thing ended up in a very emotionally abusive relationship with a narcissist.

Absolute disgusting of a teaching that is forced upon women and young girls. Destroying their self image, and the sense of self worth, ruining the relationship they have with their own sexuality and makes them more vulnerable for predatory people. I hate, hate this with passion.

In their pursuit of "liberation" they sold their bodies and souls to the highest bidders. How unbelievably misguided and sad.

The media’s villianization or sexualization of feminism is why many folks don’t take what the media claims feminism is, seriously. To be empowered you don’t have to be rude or hyper sexual and many feminist will tell you that but the media realized whenever feminism was getting more popular, they wanted to package it into a bow and make it something that’s still sexy for men…

This seems like a behavior really linked to american culture. Having grown up in Paris, I've never felt this pressure. A lot of people I know, myself included, only had their first time after they were 18, some 23 and I have a friend my age who is still a virgin and no one really cares.
Sure in highschool some of the popular kids loved to brag about their recent sex adventures but they never pressured or mocked anyone for not having sex and no one really cared that much about it.

I am so done with not having sex means you’re not sexy or you are a prude.

But having sex is a right of passage, but a woman is still considered a slut if she has sex, even one time.

I also hate the comments that men make comparing women and their promiscuity to a car. Women are literal objects to them and they are confident proclaiming them.

Women need to stop feeling pressured by men and their female friends to have sex or if not pressured get made fun of for it. Just why?

I don’t know how to articulate it, but I feel sexual liberation of women, while good, led to women’s power being taken away. It was just another way of men dictating what happens with women’s bodies.

No I am not saying anytime someone has sex, there is an abuse of power dynamics. But I worry with how some go about their sexual liberation: men and women.

Onto part 2.
