"What was your experience of seeing Eyes Wide Shut?"

"Well, the first time I saw Silent Running was..."

Great film, I am so glad I saw it in a theater in 1999.

The fact that this film is so vehemently defended or decried so many years later shows what an interesting piece of film making it is. I'm off to watch it again.

Eyes Wide Shut is about dissonence, not conspiracy. People with money, power, and celebrity get away with stuff they shouldn't. That's not a conspiracy that's just a fact of life. It's about how we as normal, powerless human beings react to it and how we let that information shape our lives and effect the way we live, which is the only thing we can do realisticly.

Kermode looks more like Michael Portillo with every passing year

Although Clockwork Orange the movie is subtitled in The Netherlands, we always keep the original language title. The book on the other hand did have a Dutch title: Boze Jongens, which translates as Angry Boys 😅.

Wow, that was a depressing 20 minutes. I remember going to see 'Eyes Wide Shut' when it came out in 1999; I consciously prepared myself not to have any expectations that might prejudice my viewing, because I had learned from experience that Kubrick's films always subvert whatever expectation you might initially bring to them, and yet, as I left the screening, I found myself shaking my head in disbelief that Kubrick had still managed to completely surprise me... by making a film about emotion and sentimentality, the very things critics had long disparaged his films for lacking! I got home and turned on the TV and found Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' playing; it was the perfect accidental double feature!

I dread the follow up to this video, but of course, I'll have to watch to try to understand how two seemingly intelligent men cannot seem to see what it so obvious to me; that 'Eyes Wide Shut' is a brilliant, funny, disturbing and truthful illustration of the human condition, as worthy as any of being considered a masterpiece.

I'm not a big Kubrick fan, but I think all his films have a streak of comedy. The main thing I remember about Eyes Wide Shut is just how much it emphasised Tom Cruises diminutive stature  for comic effect.
Also I think finding the mask in is home was to imply his wife was at the ball rather than anything else.
It's a long time since I've seen it.

The best christmas movie ever made

It's funny The Drama movie has the same setup Zendaya has a story about acting out a "fantasy" that sets Robert Patterson's life spiraling out of control. Eyes Wide Shut has Nicole Kidman telling a story about a "fantasy" about an affair that she never actually went through with. It also sends Tom Cruise's life spiraling out of control. Both movies are about two men who can't handle their wife's revelations... That's the point!
I love Eyes Wide Shut to me it's Kubrick's masterpiece.

I have to say I love Eyes Wide Shut (or Legs Wide Open as my friend calls it). Jocelyn Pook's soundtrack is outstanding for a start and sets the wonderfully  unsettling tone. And it's great to see Tom Cruise being made to look so utterly pathetic

Comes across as 2 closed minded blokes down the pub talking about how they never see green cars anymore while 200 hundred green cars go by in the background.

Tunes into a pod about Kubrick and EWS... 2-minutes in, Kermode on Silent Running (for the second time in two weeks) hahaha

Ok the Silent Running thing HAS to be a bit at this point, right?

Kubrick's wife, Christiane, made it clear that after the release of Clockwork Orange, they received plausible death threats on their home phone. His primary motivation for pulling the film was to protect his wife and children. That's all that matters.
p.s. There wasn't a single frame of Full Metal Jacket that looked like it was filmed within 5000 miles of southeast Asia.

The book it's based on is excellent read it not so long ago. By Austrian symbolist writer Arthur Schnitzler, called Träumnovelle or 'Dream Story'.

Such a Kermode thing to not like Eyes Wide Shut.

Mark would rather feel ‘right’ than actually rediscover a classic. Can you imagine going into a film hoping it’s bad just to be ‘right’ all the time.

Eyes Wide Shit was the working title for Human Centipede.

Having a deadline definitely focuses the attention. I work in a job where, when learning the trade I had weeks on a given project and struggled. When released into the real world, time constraints and budget were everything, if you missed a deadline, well, let's just say you NEVER missed a deadline!
