What’s the one “simple service” that turned into a bigger job for you?
Oil filter, plugs, brakes — I’d love to hear your worst (or most annoying) surprises 👇

The oil looks OK, but I would run it for 100 miles and see what it looks like - as it will need to run a bit for the new oil to have a chance to (hopefully) dislodge some crap.

I have an 1100GS. When checking the oil level it’s a good idea to leave the bike on the side stand for five minutes or so after you switch it off and then put it on the centre stand before checking the level. Apparently this will allow the oil to drain from the horizontally mounted oil cooler giving a much more consistent reading. 👍

As the oil filter is vertically mounted you can fill it with oil before fitting. Also make sure the oil filter sealing ring comes out with the old filter; they often get left behind.

You can also try a strip of sand paper inside the oil filter removal tool ….. gives it a bit of grip 👍🏻

Personally I would run it with that oil for a week then check again and decide then....

I had a spark plug snap in the hole and the thread of the spark plug was left in. Took me hours of trying to get it out, eventually I used a huge flat screwdriver and managed to unscrew, still took ages though.

I personally would run the bike up to temperature, and then change the oil. Oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are not.

I'd run it for a couple of hundred miles then do another oil and filter change.

Always best to flush if the oil has been in there some time, does help, looking forward to thr next instalment 👍

Your oil sight glass itself could be murky? I replaced mine a while ago on my r1100gs as it was leaking and was kind of murky looking too

Also, if you check my channel I have a video on checking the oil level for these oilhead BMWs - it is possible you have overfilled a little!
