*🇨🇿 AMERICAN REACTS TO FAMOUS CZECH INVENTIONS YOU DIDN'T KNOW CAME FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC | CZECH REACTION 🤯*
An American reacts to famous Czech inventions and discoveries that changed the world, and I had NO idea most of these came from the Czech Republic! 🇺🇸➡️🇨🇿 In today's American reaction, I watch Jen from Dream Prague break down the things you never knew were Czech, from soft contact lenses and blood types to the sugar cube, the net bag, the word "robot," and even the origin of the US dollar. This Czech reaction had my mind blown from start to finish, and I even made a crazy personal connection along the way! 😳
👁️ SOFT CONTACT LENSES – OTTO WICHTERLE
Did you know soft contact lenses were invented by a Czech? Otto Wichterle created the first soft hydrogel contacts in the late 1950s, building his first pair on Christmas Day at his kitchen table using a bicycle dynamo, a bell transformer, and a Merkur construction set, the famous Czech toy brand! As someone who wears contacts every day, this one hit home. Today his soft contacts are prescribed to over 90% of contact wearers worldwide. And the name Wichterle sounded SO familiar to me... watch to see the insane connection I made during this American reaction! 🤯
👜 THE NET BAG – SÍŤOVKA
The net bag you see on Instagram influencers didn't come from Paris or Brooklyn. It was invented in the 1920s by Vavřin Krčil, a Czech who turned his hairnet business into a global product by simply adding handles. It became a symbol of the Czech babička during communist times and is now making a comeback in Europe with the EU ban on free single-use plastic bags. Czech friends, do you still use the síťovka for groceries? In America I've only ever seen these at the beach! 🏖️
💵 THE US DOLLAR CAME FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC?!
This one blew my mind as an American. 🇺🇸 The origins of the US dollar trace back to the Czech mining town of Jáchymov in 1520, where Count Hieronymus Schlick minted the tolar (thaler). This silver coin spread across Europe and the world, becoming the tallero in Italy, the daler in Denmark, the leu and lev in Romania and Bulgaria, and the leeuwendaalder for the Dutch, who brought it to the 13 colonies. That's how America got the word "dollar" in 1792! 🤑
🩸 BLOOD TYPES – JAN JANSKÝ
Czech psychiatrist and neurologist Jan Janský discovered the four blood type classifications we now know as A, B, AB, and O. A discovery that saves lives every single day during surgeries and medical emergencies, and it came from a Charles University graduate in Prague! 🏥
🧊 THE SUGAR CUBE – JAKUB KRYŠTOF RAD
In 1843 in Dačice, Jakub Kryštof Rad invented the sugar cube after his wife Juliana cut herself chopping a loaf of sugar. Oh, and he was the father of 16 children! ☕
🎨 BOHEMIANS & BOHEMIA
I always thought Bohemia was a German thing! Turns out Bohemia is part of the Czech Republic, along with Moravia and Silesia. So how did "bohemian" come to mean free-spirited artists in Paris? A French case of mistaken identity involving the Roma people. Even Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody came to mind! 🎸
🤖 THE WORD "ROBOT" – KAREL ČAPEK
The word robot comes from the Czech "robota," meaning forced labor. Karel Čapek used it in his famous play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) in the 1920s, but it was actually his brother Josef, an artist, who came up with the word! 🎭
🇨🇿 CZECH FRIENDS, I NEED YOUR HELP!
Is all of this true? Did you already know these Czech inventions? Do you still see net bags in Czech grocery stores? And what do the French really think about Bohemia? Drop a comment below, I read every single one! 👇
