I have written this before but will again. If MC had only shown up and not sung a note this concert would still be the legend it is. Her body language and unusually long hands (well, fingers) alone are music in and of themselves, and say it all. That she was in stupendous voice and form is the icing on the cake. How fortunate we are that they captured the event on film for posterity.

Magnificence of manner, interpretative powers, and last but not least voice. She was the Queen of Opera.

To be in her presence as I was at 16 yrs old in the audience for her farewell tour was similar to this audience reaction but greater if you can imagine. Idolizers in the crowd tossing flowers and screaming like a rock concert. Every hand gesture, every glance was choreographed. Every gesture had a meaning. You know you were part of history and her throat was truly touched by God and given to us for such a short time on earth. Her passion filled you unlike any performance I’ve ever seen.

To find Callas singing live on my phone, purely by chance, is a miracle that thrills my heart: thankyou!

The acting part without singing, from the first part of Pirate aria is beyond words... a masterclass itself.

Divina.

Her middle range was unique, nothing like it in all recorded history and highly unlikely there will ever be again such an intense and dramatic sound. That for me is what puts Maria Callas above all other sopranos.

Don't you just love the way she lives every moment while she performs, she isn't on a recital stage she's in the middle of a production. As an opera singer she will always be head and shoulders above all comers. Uniquely brilliant.
