Choki Motobu
Motobu Chōki.is the Okinawan karateka who defeated Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan, in a challenge match. Whereby
Motobu, a renowned fighter known for practical, street-oriented karate, style derived from trainining with different Okinawan teachers was reportedly furious that a newspaper mistakenly credited Funakoshi a more academic, "watered down" practitioner in Motobu's view for a 1922 fight where Motobu had knocked out a boxer.
Following this, Motobu challenged Funakoshi to a kakedameshi (a sparring match that starts with crossed arms and often ends on the ground) and defeated him easily in front of his students, according to accounts. Motobu apparently knocked him down three times
