Why did Americans look so much slimmer in the 1970s?
Photos, television footage, and family albums from the era reveal a striking difference between Americans then and today. But the explanation goes far beyond simply eating less or exercising more.
In 1970s America, portion sizes were smaller, everyday routines involved more movement, and highly processed foods had not yet become as dominant in the average diet. Fast food existed, but eating habits, snacking patterns, and the food industry looked very different from what we know today.
