Marcus Ulpius Trajan, born in Italica, came to power in 98 AD and became one of Rome's most important emperors. His reign was marked by intense military activity and territorial expansion that brought the Roman Empire to its greatest extent.

In this documentary, we focus on Trajan's Dacian Wars and his conflict with Decebalus, King of Dacia.

We will analyze the political and military context that led Rome to confront the powerful Dacian state, heir to the victories won by Decebalus against Domitian. We will see how Trajan prepared the campaign from Germania, Pannonia, and Moesia, mobilizing legions and vexillations from different regions of the Empire.

The First Dacian War began in 101 AD. We will follow the advance of the Roman armies, the operations around the Danube, the battles of Tapae, the Dacian offensive on Lower Moesia, and the counter-offensive personally led by Trajan.

We will also examine the campaigns of 102 and the harsh conditions imposed on Decebalus after his defeat: the dismantling of Dacian fortresses, the surrender of weapons and military engineers, the return of Roman deserters, and the transformation of Dacia into a state dependent on Rome.

But the peace would be short-lived.

Between 103 and 105, Decebalus began to rebuild his forces and prepare for a new war. The capture of the Roman commander Pompey Longinus and the recapture of Sarmizegetusa forced Trajan to return to the Danube.

In the Second Dacian War, Rome once again mobilized a massive army. After the fall of the fortresses in the Orăştie Mountains and the siege of Sarmizegetusa Regia, Decebalus's kingdom was definitively defeated.

We will also follow the final moments of the Dacian king, pursued by Roman forces, and the creation of the new Roman province of Dacia.

Finally, we will analyze the consequences of the conquest: the Romanization of the territory, the exploitation of its gold, silver, and iron mines, the construction of new cities and fortifications, the enormous spoils obtained by Rome, and the celebration of Trajan's triumph.

A history of Rome, Trajan, Decebalus, the Roman legions, and the wars that definitively transformed the map of the Empire.
