When did the Spanish Empire reach its greatest extent, and how far did its dominions extend? The answer requires comparing two distinct periods: the reign of Philip II and the vast collection of American territories united at the end of the 18th century.
In this documentary from Estirpe Hispánica, we explore more than three centuries of expansion, from Columbus's voyages and the Treaty of Tordesillas to the frontiers of North America. We follow the conquests of Mexico and the Andes, the silver routes, and the navigation that connected New Spain with the Philippines.
The accession of Philip II to the throne of Portugal brought together under a single sovereign territories and trade networks that spanned the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Álvaro de Bazán's campaigns in the Azores secured a fundamental part of that union.
But the story continues after the Portuguese separation and the Spanish losses in Europe. The incorporation of Louisiana, the settlements in Alta California, and Bernardo de Gálvez's campaigns in the Floridas once again transformed the map.
Which territories overlapped under the Spanish Crown? Did its greatest global reach coincide with its maximum area? To understand this, we distinguish between administered territories, coastal enclaves, and borders where other European and Indigenous powers disputed or negotiated control.
