I wish I had known my grandpa when I was grown up. He died when I was in my early 20s but I was off doing my own thing. He was a tough old farmer, and a very stern man when I was a kid, but i wish I could talk to him now.

I live in Victoria's home town in a house on the water, I'm very fortunate to have the life I do. I absorb a lot of material James, your content is excellent but I want to bring up something very strange to me. I've come to admire you. From your choice of boat to your work ethic in restoring it, and your struggles to overcome gnarly obstacles that began on your first major journey to Hawaii when your rudder failed. I often watch your feed when I first awake in the morning, I'm too old walk behind you, however, I can vicariously live a sailors life through you. Thanks for sharing brother.

James, I read your post and what you shared deeply resonated with me. Showing that vulnerable side—opening up about your mom’s story, the struggles with alcoholism in your family, your grandfather as your only male role model, and what his loss meant to you at such a young age—shows a deeply human side of you. We sometimes forget that behind a sailor’s life, it isn't just beautiful landscapes and caipirinhas during epic sunsets on white-sand beaches; behind all of that, there is emotional baggage filled with family nuances.
It made me think a lot about my own story. I had a wonderful relationship with my parents, but I related deeply to your reflection: we almost never talk to them about their own dreams. We grow up seeing them as superheroes, as invulnerable figures, forgetting that they were also flesh-and-blood human beings who had doubts, who put their aspirations on hold out of fear, circumstances, or simply to fulfill their responsibilities.
When my father passed away—tomorrow actually marks 3 months since his passing—I was left with that exact same thorn in my side: realizing I never asked him what his unfulfilled dreams were, what he left behind along the way, or if he simply lived exactly the life he wanted. Your message is a valuable reminder to look at those who came before us with more empathy and humanity.
