the main idea of the album is "getting killed" (by a pretty good life)("i can't even hear myself talk, i'm tryna talk over everybody in the whole world"...)
so individuality is getting killed in favor of that which is easy and pleasurable and marketable.
i'm thinking in a sense that everyone 1) must take responsibility for their own life and 2) has a gift that's unique to them, the purpose of their life being to cultivate that gift and share their expression with the world.
except the world we live in it's easy enough to get a job that pays the bills. and settle for a romantic partner out of necessity. and come home at the end of the day and consume content, highly palatable foods, etc... "hiking up a hundred hills. you don't have to, but i will" basically, there is no real reason anyone would ever have to look deeper into themselves beyond the basic responsibilities of modern day life because, well, it's a pretty good life. cameron is going to hike those hills despite the fact that it will take more physical, mental, and spiritual effort. and it's almost like he's leading by example and inviting the listener to join him by making the declaration that he will do so.
i see the husbands as these things that people use to distract themselves. i feel like "will it wash your hair clean" is a prompt that is meant to make the audience question whether they really have time to let their gifts sit aside in favor of temporary pleasure from their distractions, or if all the time they spend avoiding these gifts will just end up as time wasted.
"and if my loneliness should stay, well some are holiest that way" someone who is taking full responsibility for their "destiny" is bound to end up lonely in a world where it's so normalized to follow the herd and distract oneself. obviously, cameron is opting for this "lonely" path with the crazy newfangled shit he creates.
"there's a horse on my back, and i may be stomped flat, but my loneliness is gone" the horse is the distractions. the life that is comfortable enough and never lonely but could never become deeply fulfilling because one refuses to face the true self that wants to be expressed. and when that dream is not actualized, one starts "fallin apart, faaaallin apart" (mental illness, bodily sicknesses, midlife crises, etc)
similarly, i see his song "warning" as a literal warning to the listener to fulfill their destiny...
"there's a tall, far-off thing with eyes whose existence i cannot prove or disprove looking at everybody all the time every single day
but you're gonna find it's not been looking at me in the same strange way that it's been looking at you" a line referencing this unique, higher gift each person holds.
"you're not wrong in this, breathing your body out there through the impossible" society might tell us it's wrong to try to do something different and that we aren't special, that our dreams are impossible or unrealistic, but cameron is affirming that it's not wrong to follow that path
"and who's gonna forgive you? who? who's gonna forgive you?" rhetoric. nobody's forgiveness will ever matter if you don't take on the responsibility of forgiving yourself, the same way you have to take on the responsibility of following and actualizing your dreams.
"now there is work to be done on the sides of your body
and there are hot things that are unusually long and they burn very badly" the work pertaining to all of the effort that one must put in to cultivate their gift, effort that goes far beyond the effort it takes to account for the basic necessities of living
"and there are plenty of people i can very easily call who can come over here within an hour and do the work that must be done on your heart
there is so so so much work to be done on your heart...
...and it's not the kind of work that you do around the house" basically saying, it is very easy to find an outside person to "solve" (distract you from) your problems when the real, good, true solution is going to be the solution you find and carry out for yourself, outside of your comfort zone (because generally the thing that scares someone the most is what will initiate the life that they truly want). in my mind this is the same thing he is trying to say about the husbands. they can distract you from the work you need to do on yourself, but when they "die" you will have made no progress.
im gonna leave u with a carl jung quote that i feel like summarizes it all:
“There is only one way and that is your way. There is only one salvation and that is your salvation… What is to come will be created in you and from you. Hence look into yourself. Do not compare. Do not measure. No other way is like yours. All other ways deceive and tempt you. You must fulfill the way that is in you.”
also i loved the bojack popups hehe
