18 men out of 270 men. That voyage was really a doomed one that somehow succeeded by skin of the remaining crews teeth.These risk takers and adventurers became history.

You should've mention that the Spanish captain Juan Sebastian Elcano was the real hero of the circumnavigation of the world, Magellan completed only half way around the globe because he was killed in the Philippines. Elcano took command of the only ship left "the Victoria" and returned to Spain with a small crew of sailors in 1522.

Would have been helpful if there was a visual map that covers the progress of the story. Just saying, hard to visualize the name of places that Ive never seen or heard before lol

Do you ever stop to think about the history that's lost? Imagine the historical knowledge that's been lost, omitted or undocumented not just in a regional or cultural context but in a human legacy aspect. Some things we will never know.

LapuLapu, while sitting meters away from the battle: "See that dude? Bring me his head."

0:35 Magellan did NOT die in the Marianas islands (Guam, Tinian, Saipan etc.), he died in Cebu, in the Philippines.
16:20 Guam is in the Marianas islands and today they are still known as the Marianas. When they left Guam, they left the Marianas and headed to the Philippines - over 2,000 km from the Marianas.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. One criticism though. After Magellan was killed it was Sebastian Elcano who led the Victoria home and completed the circumnavigation. Despite the loss of four ships the expedition was a commercial success and Elcano became famous in his time. I thought he would be worthy of mention even though this video is not about him.

16:26 Since when was the Philippines referred to as the Marianas Islands? Doesn't that name refer to the archipelago Guam belongs in?

@nesirsitsir 7 years ago

Kind of obvious question but don't know the answer... when the explorers were in the open ocean why didn't they fish for food?

@ChescoYT 7 years ago

learned about him in grade 4, for some odd reason i was infactuated by him, wanting to know more about him and his voyages, because to do that back in that time must have been one insane mental-trip!

Malacca is not an island city. It is located at the Malay Peninsula

I'm a Filipino and as a kid I never got the impression of Magellan's death being tragic. In our history books Lapu-Lapu is regarded as a hero maybe that's why. It's interesting to hear this battle from another side.
