My husband is a very respected academic and he did return from a very prestigious job abroad. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy, the govt, workplace, living conditions, made it highly challenging to have a normal, stress free life in India. We tried it for 5 years but reluctantly left to get our sanity and peace of mind back.

0:45 Don't compare 23k number with total population but compare it with numbers of tax payers 👏🏼❤

Hats off to this gentleman and his level of patience. Was difficult to sit through this talk cuz normal basic reasoning was just bouncing off Sushmita.

Whatever he’s saying is actually patriotic, if you really love you come back and contribute to its truth, no matter what it takes. Soldiers are fighting on the battlefield know they are. They are putting their life right so there is a cost of everything whether you want to build USAor you want to build India.

I agree with him that scientific institutions in india are shackled in bureaucracy like any government department. They need functional autonomy and bureaucracy

It is just not a perception, it is my belief that ANI is a "chamcha" of the ruling BJP government. It is nothing new for ANI - they were a chamcha to the ruling Congress government duing the '70s and '80s. Smita was not a "Prakash" then, but Smita's father-in-law was heading ANI then and there are widespread accounts available in the public domain and Internet, of his closeness to the ruling class. That's how ANI makes money. Of all the podcasts out there, I like this podcast because Smita asks intelligent questions and there is substance being discussed. But in this episode, my biggest takeaway was her unnecessary contrarion view - as if everything was a "so-what"! Like, is ANI a favorite of BJP and the answer was "so-what"! All this because of Sanjaya Baru called out ANI's closeness. I get that. But she visibly put Dr. Baru on the defensive, something I did not like. Dr. Baru is used to this, he was much maligned by the greatest chamcha of all times, Taklu Kher, in the past.

I left India in 1988 and had to return in 2008 for my mother after my father passed away. what pisses me off are the chaotic traffic, filth, and construction materials on the roadsides, and the lack of civic sense in the general public. Cows and stray dogs are omnipresent in big numbers. Increased migration from the east has worsened the situation. The Delhi I once knew no longer exists. Modi ji and central ministers may be doing a wonderful job at the national and international levels, but at the local leadership level, it's all a disaster. Just see the difference between Lutyens Delhi and the rest of it. If well-heeled individuals are leaving, they understand the situation is going to worsen.Its not all about money or opportunities that people leave.

Recently I visited India after few years, and the attitude of immigration officer at Airport made me felt deeply regretted why I came to this country again. They feel yeh desh unke baap ka hai

Nandan Nilekani did not "come back" because he never studied or worked abroad. He studied at IIT and then joined Patni Computer Systems where he met Narayana Murthy.

I am a taxpayer, and I feel disheartened by the basic services I receive from the government. I live in Gurgaon, yet I see garbage scattered here and there. It’s deeply disappointing. I can’t freely go to random places in the city if i wish call to. There seem to be no proper rules for road driving and anyone can stop anywhere, and auto drivers can make you wait as long as they wish. There’s a complete lack of civic sense. If I had enough money, I would, with a heavy heart, leave this broken system without a second thought.

This interview is very powerful. It explains the bubble in which elite media currently finds itself in - a bubble in which talent retention and investment in talent is a non-conversation for the political ecosystem in our country.

Hi Smita...looking at dirt,traffic chaos garbage on the road which i travel every alternate day,in bengalore,total civic apathy,I as a veteran feel very upset and would like to join the numbers leaving the country..one problem..i do not have the money..😅

@shyamrele5372 1 year ago

Mr Baru is very patient with Smita. Really a difficult interview to watch.

As a scientist working abroad, I can second whatever Dr. Baru is speaking. There is bureaucracy in everything. Sadly, its extreme in research sector as well

@HetalOza112 1 year ago

Honestly if I had the required skills and intelligence to get a job in another country like Japan or the US, I would definitely leave and never come back.

@inspiregrowth9022 1 year ago

I'm aghast that Smita doesn't find a problem that talent is leaving. There are multiple reasons why people leave and many for which they return back.
But recognize that even one person leaving, to never return back is a BIG LOSS. Only when you realize the loss, you can do something about it.
