GT4 owner here, I looked at several 911s and still chose the neutered GT4.

Porsche is backtracking on EV only for the next cayman.

I also think within one or two generations the 911 will be mid engine. They have been drifting that way for awhile now.

Having a 2023 cayman GTS 4.0 I honestly prefer it to a lot of the 911s I’ve driven. The one thing I appreciate about the 911s is that they’re a little trickier to push to the limit and are a bit more fun to do that in (not so much the newest versions which are honestly just so well sorted). The Cayman platform is SO capable and well balanced that it’s easy to drive near the limit you almost don’t have to work for it, but it really is a near perfect drivers car

Well done. Those of us who own and know the Boxster & Cayman understand why they are the best handling 911’s Porsche has ever made!

This is why in 2025 my first Porsche purchase was a spec'ed to the max 2016 981 GTS ...the GTS 4.0 and GT4 still marked up like crazy and won't come down in price on the secondly market.. Don't get me wrong the 718 is a special car, but Boxters and Caymans need a flat six.

I've owned two Boxsters with manual transmissions, and a 911 Turbo S.  I've been without a Porsche for 8 months now and I'm jonesing for a Cayman or Boxster with a manual, not a 911 with the PDK.  I imagine the 4.0 liter Cayman 6 speed is the perfect sports car.  I hope they reverse their decision to discontinue.

Excellent video! This captures exactly why I bought a 2024 Cayman GTS 4.0 after owning more than 20 BMWs since I was in college. I wanted to get one of the last analog mid-engine sports cars before they are all gone. And I truly love it.
I am not a “Porsche guy” since I’m not a 911 fan. I once owned an OG NSX for 7 years, and the Cayman brings back all of those great memories. Porsche is wavering on making all future Caymans EV, so we’ll see if mine is actually one of the last ICE mid-engine Porsches.

I own a ‘21 718 Spyder, a ‘24 Box GTS 4.0, and just picked up a’25 GT4RS I’ve owned three 911s including a GT3 Touring.  Since I’m not a track guy I prefer the 718s.   They are awesome.  Smaller, lighter, great manual boxes (The GT4RS as the exception but great trans as well).  Great handling.  The best on the street.  YMMV

Driven both platforms on mountain roads and track, from base models up to GT. For my values, I bought a T. In pure form the 911 is a gem because of driver engagement. They’re subtle differences and seemingly contrarian  but I prefer a Cayman for the track and grand touring use and a 911 for the mountain.

As a manual 981 GTS driver there is no better drivers car under 100k!

I'm pleased to have a CPO '22 Boxster GTS 4.0L GTS on its way to me this week, replacing my 981 Boxster S 6MT that was totalled by an inattentive driver last year. I do firmly believe that it may be the best driver's car to ever exist (top-down manual transmission being critical to my definition of "driver's car"). I'd say the Spyder would be a step above due to the double wishbone front suspension, but I don't want to deal with the flimsy tent for a top.

Having had both 911s and Caymans I can say objectively, they are both fantastic.  The Cayman may be a little better sports car because of size and engine placement, but the 911 is a great sports and GT car that possesses a magic that comes from its rear-engine heritage that began with the 356.  The thing to consider here is, like other car makers, there is a hierarchy of models to spread the brand across a larger demographic.  In addition, you don't build two car models to compete with one another, that would be foolish.  So, the Boxter/Cayman was introduced as the entry level cars to the aspirational 911.  Even within the 911 brand there is a hierarchy: Carrera, Turbo, and GT cars--with the varied body styles thrown in for variety that broadens the demographic.  It only makes sense Porsche would keep the entry level cars at the lower end of power, sophistication, and body styles.  In addition to horsepower deficits, the B/C cars have strut suspension all around compared to rear multi-link, rear steering, etc.  When they dropped the GT motorsport engine in the Cayman chassis, the price took a jump--largely because of the expensive 4.0 liter.  You spend less, you get less, spend more, get more.  If I could only afford a Cayman, I would be happy the rest of my life, and with a base model!  They're fabulous--even the 718 turbo four-cylinder.
In retirement and with Porsche prices having risen dramatically, I won't be purchasing anymore new 911s.  But I couldn't be happier with my current Porsche pair, a '90 Carrera 2 with a mildly hot-rodded 3.8, suspension and brakes to match, and a 996.2 Carrera cabrio.  I could see another Cayman in my garage, and I wouldn't feel like I was driving Porsche's red-headed stepchild.
