The initial reaction to seeing a celebrity on an advert in the UK is usually along the lines of "Oooh they must be nearly skint (broke)" rather than "This product must be great if it's endorsed by (insert star here)" 😂😂😂

When Beckham moved to LA, the newscaster was commenting on how he drives his own car.  That was very novel to them in the US

Most people in UK love that Episode of South Park, they got it spot on

When the celebrity, who barely had a pop career and married a glamour model, Pete Andre, moved to our town, everyone practically ignored him. When his team wanted to film him shopping with his children, nearly all the shops declined to take part. The only time he attracted a crowd was when he opened a cafe in town with his brother. hardly anyone went there, and even he was spotted in the window drinking another brand's coffee. My daughter at the time was working check-in at the local nightclub.  He turned up shortly after moving to the town with his hangers-on and demanded to get in for free. My daughter refused and demanded he pay the £5 like anyone else. He demanded the manager and gave the ''do you know who I am spiel'' She said ''yes Peter Andre and it is still 5.00 to enter no exceptions'', he demanded the manager, and the manager backed her up and charged the 5.00 to get in no one is treated as special when they are not working they are treated the same as any one else. celebrity is a job, not a divine status. Needless to say, he acted more like a human being after that. At least treating them the same as anyone else means that top stars, even John Travolta and Tom Cruise, can walk around our town and behave like ordinary people, even when they are visiting Saint Hill Manor. Even Dame Judy Dench's husband, when alive, bought wine at the local off-license, and they both went out to buy fish and chips from the local mobile fish and chip van.

If you want to see how Brits treat royal, politicians and celebrities you just need to look at old videos of Spitting Image. Absolutely ruthless stuff. Even the royal family used to get trashed regularly.

There are some famous people who rarely get mocked…usually they’re honest and fairly humble. David Attenborough is a good example because we know that he loves and believes in what he does. The older he becomes the more revered he becomes. There are others, but not the same league. If the person is talented and not trying to be something they’re not they’re generally loved or respected. Many US celebrities and some British, too, are just vacuous and famous only for being famous.

A great example of the difference is David Blaine. Americans treated him like a messiah and every one of his big public stunts was given great respect and reverence.

But when he came to the UK and spent weeks inside a plastic box suspended near Tower Bridge, the Brits mostly jeered and made his life a misery with 24/7 noise and pranks and mockery. 😂

You should check out Mock the Week JJ you’d probably really enjoy it, although there’s a lot of references that may send you to Wikipedia 😂

She did mean America yes. She was all over the place this time 😅

As someone else in the comments has pointed out there are very few celebrities that are "off limits" with David Attenborough probably being at the top of that list but he has been in the industry for decades, he is 99 years old now and has learned how to handle the press and public over the years... he has faced controversy in the past over animals being taken from the wild but was the first person to admit that the way things were done in the past wasn't right and has spent his entire career educating people the world over about things we can all do to make a difference.

Celebrities in the UK have to know their place in society and that even includes the royals, if they start getting above their station the press and public will quickly pull them down.

A good example of how to handle a controversy was when Jimmy Carr was caught up in a tax scandal and at the time was hosting a tv show called 8 out of 10 cats, the show was a panel show with comedians that spoke and joked about what the public was talking about that particular week and everyone was waiting to see if/how it would be addressed... it was probably the best episode of all time 😂 Jimmy knew that he was going to be roasted and he sat and took it all and they went in HARD for the whole episode!

When it comes to celebrities telling us who to vote for or speaking about something we know they aren't educated on it can turn into a PR nightmare for them. The same can happen when they talk about money and the cost of living.

People can respect David Attenborough when he is talking about the environment because he's extremely educated in the subject.
Brian May is respected when speaking about astrophysics as its known he is educated in that.
Brian Cox is more well known now for being a celebrity physicist than a former member of the band D:Ream and you're more likely to see Alex James from Blur on tv talking about cheese than music.
When it comes to religion or writing Rev Richard Coles, although he does still talk about his time in the bands bronski beat and the communards.
Stephen Fry is well respected when speaking on multiple subjects including mental health, sexuality, his views on religion and multiple other subjects too.

Celebrities here have to have a good sense of humour before anything else I think.

Americans would be amazed to watch the TV work of Gordon Ramsay in the UK. He’s a lot more approachable and levelheaded here and not always just getting angry. He cranks up the anger and shouting for the American audience, kind of following in the footsteps of Simon Cowell - who had normalised Brits being mean to people on reality TV shows.

American celebs are often shocked by being talked to by a Brit as if they are just normal! (It's their humble moment)

In the UK ' Tall-Poppy Syndrome ' is very much a thing - especially in the press. They may build 'em.up and give the positive attention but pretty quickly they are critisised and brought back down to earth with a bump. No-one is allowed to get too big for their boots - we like our celebs to stay self-aware. No-one is immune for Brit piss-taking 😄

If you think ramsay is crule you should see the chef he trained under that dude is fricking nuts

In the UK celebrities are 'fair game' for the media and the general public.  The Royal Family is no exception to this although the late Queen had it better than the current King Charles.

What’s ridiculous about celebrities getting stars is they act like they’ve been honoured with an award, but in reality, they have to pay for it themselves. A star on the Walk of Fame costs $85,000.

We had Charles and Camilla on our yacht in Turkey. The Turkish Navy and Coast Guard literally had to ram the Press photographers' rented boats out of the way. However, when Diana was holidaying on the quiet island of Barbuda, none of the local boat captains in Antigua would take the Press over. "Leave the girl alone" was the general answer. One French photographer did get one shot of her doing a cartwheel of her on the beach with the boys.

I had the same issue after working on a Prince gig and Mick Jagger + Jerry Hall walked out a green room, I just looked up said hello and carried on doing my job. Two weeks ish later we were working on the Rolling Stones, Urban jungle/Steel Wheels gig at the old Wembley Stadium and as the band came off stage on the last night all the crew applaud and Mick saw me again (at the time I was a wet behind the ears youth not part of the click ) so he only go's and walks over straight to me and says so how was it ?
I had 200+ older, long time served roadies giving me the evil eye .
Great memories, even if I mentally shat myself when he shook my hand.   🤣🤣

I've been to a few sci fi conventions in the UK. The celebs often talk about how much more nicer the UK is. The conventions are more relaxed, people are frendly but not over friendly and there isn't the need for security that there is in the US.

I've even had drinks in the bar with a few actors. THAT would NEVER happen in the US.

Americans become dangerously obsessed with celebs. They have delusions about them and are likely to have mental health issues over them.

Harry Styles routinely walks around Hamstead and doesn’t get bothered.

A celebrity endorsement would have the opposite effect on me, I wouldn't bother it.
Brits love an underdog too, but not in the world of so called celebrities.
The very title is odd, bcos if you question what they are celebrated for, (being literal), the answer is usually  ... nothing!  Famous for being famous is totally vacuous imho,  🤷‍♀️🇬🇧
