My gravy browning has a sell by date of 1993.  I think I am keeping it as a historical artefact.  I can’t bring myself to throw it away.

Even after all these years, I learned a few useful tips: the pattern on top was so easy, quick and sensible and I'm pleased NOT to see the inevitable and unnecessary tomato-paste which everything these days seems to contain! (Even some Mushroom Soup from Waitrose contained Tomato?!! Why?!!) Thanks Dame Mary - I hope you get extra commission!

In America, this is Shephard's Pie. We don't use lamb regularly. Also, we add an additional layer of vegetables over the miced beef. Like carrots, corn, and peas. I then sprinkle mild cheddar on top or ground saltine crackers.

What a simple dish! Mary seemed a bit nervous relatively (a bit of stutter in the beginning), Judy was a bit calming here. And reminder her of the butter knobs on top :) Poor Mary getting her hand burned on the stove. That hand has been through enough!

"...and this oven really is on...." yeah, right - not one bit of steam came out of that dish and not one single bubble of gravy in sight.... :-D

I always loved Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie, they are the greatest comfort food!! I use vegetarian mince to make this and have whatever veg I feel like with it, carrots, green beans, broccoli, or whatever you prefer. Mary Berry very pretty, and a good cook.

Adding raw onions to the cooked mince..much better to caramelize the onions first to bring outs their flavour
