Is Taiwan truly a country? Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wen stated, "Taiwan has never been independent, and Taiwan has never been a country." Is this statement historically valid? Did Taiwan ever have a political entity with state-like characteristics during Zheng Chenggong's regime's "Dongning" in 1661? Can "Dongning" be considered a country in Taiwanese history?

Was the "Republic of Formosa," established on May 25, 1895, a true country? What elements of a modern nation-state did it possess? Hu Shih, in his autobiography, mentions that his father, Hu Chuan, was responsible for the defense of the rear mountains after the establishment of the Republic of Formosa, even calling Hu Chuan "the first victim of the first democracy in East Asia." What is the significance of this historical material for understanding Taiwan in 1895? After the establishment of the Republic of Formosa, the Sino-Japanese War broke out, with Taiwanese resistance against Japan lasting for several months. Should this war be called the "War of Resistance against Japan," local armed resistance, or a war for Taiwanese independence? Some argue that "Taiwan has never been independent" because it has historically been ruled by the Netherlands, Spain, the Zheng regime, the Qing Dynasty, Japan, and the Republic of China. But are "having been ruled by other regimes" and "Taiwan never forming a country" the same thing? From the perspective of international law and state structure, Taiwan today has its own government, people, territory, and the power to operate externally. So, is Taiwan a "de facto country"? If we separate "historical country," "de facto country," and "internationally recognized country," how should we answer the question "Is Taiwan a country?" today? What is the biggest problem with Cheng Li-wen's statement? For a fascinating interview, stay tuned to @CTSThreeKingdomsDiscussion!
