When I was attending Junior High School (1968-71), I worked lunches in the school cafeteria kitchen. I was the pot scrubber. By working, I earned lunch. I was given lunch money by my dad, but I banked it.
Every month, I had enough to ride the bus to Disneyland. I'd arrive around 9 am, and enjoy the day until 5 pm, taking the last bus home.
The money I had covered bus fare, the 15-ticket book, and meals. What a great magical time. Those were the days.
Back in 1983 when I was just 20....I worked in the main kitchen beneath New Orleans Square. There were many exit doors leading down to the Pirates ride where I worked and one morning I got there before the parked opened and went down to the cave area. A cast member was working down there and told me it was OK for me to look but not to touch. I went up to the pirates drinking wine, the skeleton pirate in bed, and of course the treasure skeleton. I knew at the time how lucky I was. I ran out of time and had to return to work but it was a great adventure! Disney has to update and some have been a home run but this new tech trick is a swing and a miss.
Omg just listening to the animatronics unlocks memories. Stop it. Thats crazy. I spent 2 weeks every summer in Anaheim with my cousins. We could see the fireworks from their yard every night (it was still safe) we must have gone to Disney land 10 times a summer. Haven’t been back in 30 years. Cali is different now and way too expensive.
wonderful memories from taking my elderly dad on this ride long ago. told him not to be scared because he was terrified of roller coasters and there i was screaming when the boat dipped down. His laughter was awesome. i miss him.
Always my favorite ride at Disneyland. Once I went on it 3 times in a row while the rest of my party watched the Main Street Parade---this was as an adult!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
I am 69, and remember well my first trip to Disneyland. I was in 5th grade. My grandparents had moved to Hemet/San Juacinto, and we took time off from school to go visit. It is truly the happiest place on earth.
