He conceived the game years earlier as a sci-fi horror novel about a haunted house on Mars, but eventually abandoned it. However, his idea was reignited when he played the original Resident Evil, and thought the game's explanation as to why Chris and co. couldn't just go outside the mansion was pretty contrived and then he remembered his haunted house on Mars idea and tried to turn it into a game. Problem was Creative Reality had no experience at all in this kind of game, being veterans of the Amiga and Commodore, the crew was very small and unexperienced with 3D, which led to a lot of creative problems in development, like the zombies weren't supposed to come in until towards the end, and ghosts were supposed to be the main enemy but because the animation for the ghosts looked quite poor and they had trouble implementing them, the zombies became the main enemy and this is also a reason why the zombies don't stay dead in the game. He also said that the Mars base was originally supposed to look more like a Gothic mansion or normal building in space to break away from the industrial aesthetic that the Alien movies had made so popular in Sci-Fi horror, but admits that a lot of the game just looks like an Alien set anyway.
He also said in an interview that he believes that the Dead Space franchise took some inspiration from Martian Gothic, but he personally felt that DS was too depressing and bleak for his taste, which was something he was worried about with Martian Gothic, so he had a campy spoof radio play as a bonus in the game.
