The 1990s was a time of rapid change in the tech powering video game graphics. From pre-rendering, to ray casting, to texture-mapped polygons, it seemed that a major innovation was around every corner.
However, the pathway towards graphical realism hasn't always been clear. Let's explore one such forking path: full-motion video. With CD-powered consoles and home PCs arriving in the 90's, FMV-powered games became viable at last, promising the world... but only delivering oddity after oddity.

This is a paired down and censored version of the original video released on the 19th of October. YouTube flagged it as inappropriate for ads, so I had to excise a pretty big chunk from the video. Case in point: my entire review of Phantasmagoria 2 was removed! In addition to that, there are many small edits made to avoid "excessive" violence or mention of heavy topics.
When talking about a game, I always like to have a balanced discussion on the cultural significance of certain aspects of that game, even when those subjects are controversial. I was careful to give ample warning, censor, and provide context, but the algorithm cares not for such things (and especially not the latter of those three).
If you'd like to hear me discuss the ramifications of "that scene" in Phantasmagoria, how weird and transgressive much of Phantasmagoria 2 is, and you want to see some of the cartoonish violence in these games, please watch the video for free on Patreon here:

The video's privacy level is set to public, so you can watch it without paying a dime (although if you're on mobile, you may need to make a free account). I won't earn any ad revenue from the Patreon version, so if you prefer YouTube as a platform and want to help me out, by all means, enjoy this version too (or consider chipping in a few bucks on Patreon if you're in a position to do so). Broadly speaking, you're still getting the FMV horror experience with this version. But I'll be damned if I spent several months on this video just to hide it in shame!
Before the video was demonetized, I was given a Super Thanks from 3 different people:

Just wanted to recognize the three of you here for you generosity. It is sincerely appreciated.
Anyway, thanks for reading this and watching the video. I know reupload situations like this typically don't do well in terms of viewership, so I really do appreciate your attention here. Have a very happy Halloween or a happy whatever time of year you're watching this.
