The first time I read this, Part 1 left me scratching my head and thinking WTF...... but reading Part 2 brought me to tears. After finishing it, I immediately re-read it, then twice more. I have concluded that I want this book neatly placed beside me in my coffin when I die.

I bought the book yesterday and I have already finished it. I found the book enticing and sometimes even comedic. However, sometimes I felt pity for the protagonist and even rejection. Never had I felt such joy for a gripping book.
Thanks for the video and the insights.

How come I only discovered this channel now?? What a gem!

Brilliant.  I wish I had watched this before I read the book.

Director Martin Scorsese has read this one, and in an interview, he said Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) in Taxi Driver is inspired by the Underground Man.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for before diving in to Notes for Underground!

Even though you "dissed" stream of consciousness (BIG Faulkner fan, here). I watched all of the vid.

I subbed.

Looks like your vid output has slowed, I hope you continue. I liked your explanation of the book's  structure.

A song know as Song from Under the Floorboards by Magazine was influenced by Notes from Underground

i am glad you kept it terse..i found the novel quite dark in its hyper conscious tone and read a part of it..maybe i will give it another go

I tried to read, "What is to be done". It was too long and too much for me to get into, but I did not feel I was deprived of anything as I have read and re-read "notes from the underground".

Congrats on your videos!! There are amazing, my husband shared with me and we love it

Awesome channel by the way and great videos 👏🏻👏🏻

These are great! more please on Dosty

Thank you. And thanks so much for talking about this work of Dostoevsky's . I very much enjoyed your video. Glad to find your channel today - I found it via a recommendation from Eleanor's lovely channel The only real Property. I can't remember if I have read Notes from Underground but I did see a really good play adaptation of it a long time ago - above a pub in Charing Cross Road (called the Bear and Staff) - maybe around 1986 or somewhere around there.

Really enjoyed this video! You explained Dostoevsky’s style really well. His use of stream of consciousness seems to be everywhere in his work—not just in Notes from Underground, but also in The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, Crime and Punishment, and even The Gambler. The narrator in White Nights also comes to mind—his thoughts seem to race so fast, shifting between the rational and the irrational. Do you think Dostoevsky himself thought like that? And since you're a Russian literature major, have you ever considered reading him in Russian? Best regards from France.

Funny how a single word can be so clarifying. As soon as you said "hyperconscious," I thought, yep, that's precisely the frame of his thinking. It's very helpful to recognize that neurotically-tinged outlook in some of Dostoyevsky's characters. I was about to ask if you've read War & War by László Krasznahorkai, which similarly captures the particulate-oriented awareness of someone obsessed and drifting, but you dislike stream-of-consciousness writing, so that book is now a semi-recommendation from me (for some unknown future when you're left with only stream-of-consciousness novels to read). Once again, the density of your overview is much appreciated.

I love Dostoevsky, but for some reason, I can't really get through this novella, I tried twice to read it and couldn't go on.

And what I mean by underground is the truly deceased not bullshit rue pops
