Soviet-era history books (roughly 1922–1991) were often written under strict government oversight.

I am just diving into Russian literature with some of the most famous works, having this context is so helpful! I didn’t know the history Petersburg.

13:22 I had never thought of it that way. So insightful, thank you

omg I NEED your perspective of soviet history pleaseeee

Thanks for all this very relevant information 😊

You should put a video course about russian literature. Paid, of course, either with Patreon or some other way. I would certainly go for it!

I love Russian literature. It’s quite extraordinary. I am desperate to visit St Petersburg and Moscow, not to mention Kiev and Belarus. Given the fact I am Irish, these plans have to be postponed. One day though. I will walk around hallucinating in a nostalgic fever and saying ‘как дела’ to my brothers and sisters

Thank you for tis video! It was wondeful!

988 what kinda Ukraine and Belarus were existing at that period of time???

so informative !!

1904. On August 24, 1904, corporal punishment (flogging with rods or whips) was abolished in Russia for peasants, who by then remained the only social class to whom this form of punishment was applied. The Tsar granted this favor in honor of the birth of his heir. In 1915, flogging was reinstated for lower ranks in the army, and under Kolchak, flogging would once again become a universal punishment for peasants. The ties and traditional values of "lost" Russia clearly demonstrate why the country experienced three revolutions in less than 15 years, and why the Bolsheviks ultimately prevailed.

Super informative, thank you!

This is so helpful thank you!!

I love learning about Russian history and literature.  Thank you.
