something I always loved about their relationships is that for all the references Abed makes, Jeff understands or at least recognizes almost all of them. It's sad that Jeff keeps it hidden, but the real him, underneath all the bluster and expensive clothes is a huge nerd who was raised by television
The second hug at the end is everything. Jeff knows how to socialize, but it's a facade, and Abed has no facades, and he struggles to socialize. They're the same person, on different sides of the coin
It took me two rewatches to truly realize that both of them emotionally relied on one another because they were basically raised the same way but dealt with it in different ways.
jeffs ability to recognize abeds train of thought and follow it to its logical conclusion in a split second is so fucking beautiful to me. The look of annoyance on his face a good 20 seconds before anyone else even hase the slightest of clues what abed is on about.
i’m surprised no one mentions the fact that both of them are walking movie references. jeff grew up on television, he learned to be who he was by emulating the people that raised him, the suave hero in control of the situation. he is always acting, which is why it’s so easy for his anger to get the best of him when his façade slips. abed recognizes this and so they begin to play off of each other, and over time become closer than any of the others in the show
At some point Abed just gets Jeff so well and that kinda intimidates Jeff. Also nothing beats the delivery of “Don’t say that. I know you don’t mean that.”
this is the ultimate 'deeply personal bond constructed almost entirely of reference humour and witty bickering'. jeff mostly just does this to avoid personal connection or vulnerability by shifting the topic to an 'easy celebrity target' but since abed already relates to the word through these references anyway neither really has to try that hard to understand one another. on multiple occasions jeff expresses that 'real' conversation is when people can ignore all the mushy complicated stuff to straight-forwardly say whatever they want to - almost exactly what abed has always done.
37:03 it's wonderful to see "my dinner with Andre" Abed breaking character into regular Abed when Jeff put his phone in his drink. Danny Pudi is an amazing actor, damn
I love that Jeff and Abed are literally the 2 sides of Dan Harmon(he said in multiple interviews that he started the series writing Jeff as himself in his community collage days, but he's in actuality Abed)
This is why Jeff knows every one of Abeds references and truly understands him, because they're the same person at heart
that last moment with role reversal of jeff hanging onto the meta facade and abed calling him on it is so heartbreaking what a great conclusion to this video
the comments made me realize that they get along so well not just because they were raised the same way (through TV) and handled it differently, but also because jeff imitated the characters he admired and abed wanted to understand those same characters and saw their motivations and actions as very clear. jeff is straightforward enough that he’s not confusing to abed because he imitates what has always been understandable to abed
I love how Dan Harmon’s main characters evolve from smart badasses to hopeless man children , and the sidekick characters evolve from sweet and naive to jaded cynics who are completely done with the main character’s bullcrap
