Bought my first minidisc recorder in 1998. Loved it immediately. Still own a player and many discs and it still gets used by me.

Incredible format!! I used it a lot in the early 2000s, if you record from CD digitally using the optical input the sound is almost indistinguishable from the CD source.   It's not lossless but it's much much better than early MP3s.

I bought the R70 new and travelled the world with it. My favourite among all the MD recorders even though it doesn’t have LP. Its killer feature is that it has two headphone outputs (surprised you didn’t mention this) which was awesome when listening to music with together a hot girl. It’s also the last recorder to feature the classic Walkman logo which I think is way more iconic than the newer one. The mzr70 is the most retro futuristic looking machine too in my opinion, which is cool.

My favorite format and my largest collection!  Excellent video Julian, I enjoyed it very much!

Glad to see other people out there still using their MD's!

You can turn off the AVLS on the E501 without the remote. While playing a disc, slide hold to the lock position. Then hold down the VOL + key and while still holding it down slide the hold switch in the other direction. It's in the manual.

Lovely video, I had plenty of MDs when I was younger, but the funny part is, I haven't been able to keep any as I used to buy them and resell them for a small profit, gather the money and buy clothes for the next school year.
I want a blue MZ-R55, had some really good memories with.

Type R and S are the version of the ATRAC encoding, R brought the LP modes and S was the last one, so HiMD and more

I’m still using them. I have an OEM Mazda MiniDisc LP headunit in my 2003 MX-5, my Sony recording deck in my HiFi, and my Sony NetMD portable recorder, which I connect to my Sony VIAO laptop running NetMD software on Windows XP to transfer tracks.

Type R was an upgrade to the ATRAC compression encoding. It used 2 passes so compression is less noticeable than on earlier recorders. It was improved even more with the type S encoders. Because this is only used when recording, any discs recorded on a type R machine will sound as good on a non type R machine when played back.

16:00 Sometimes they number each color indivitually to make it easier to handle stock i guess, but i’m pretty sure the final number is just indentifying that

Just younger than you for several years, i don't have money fo those md players when I'm still in college. Now I have brought the mz-n10 and mz-r909, great machines with nice design and light weighted. I suggest you to take a look on these 2 also👍

The MZ-1 Timecop cameo

I just found this video. Nice collection. I have done the same as you collecting the portable units now that I'm older & you have 2 units I don't have. I only collect Sony's branded players & recorders. I got into the format in 1993 when I was 21. I'm in the US & in a minority as MD never really caught on here, but I loved the format as you do. I was fascinated that you could record digitally on such a small format. This was long before recordable CD's too! I bought a home stereo deck to record on that came bundled with a MZ-F40 player that had a AM/FM radio as well. It was rectangular in shape, but still fairly small compared to the MZ1. lol

I was big into 12" vinyl records(maxi-singles, remixes, club mixes) & made hundreds of mixtape MD's over the years. I ended up selling my 12" singles on Ebay in the early 2000's, but before I sold each record I recorded them on MD so I had it on a digital format. I thought vinyl was out the door for good in early 2000! lol It really was virtually dead back then. Boy how it made a comeback. Going to watch part 2 now. Sorry for rambling on. Thanks for sharing. Long live Minidisc!💽

Great collection mate

i had an mz-r30 in highschool, it had an 2xAA battery holder in the box which you could attach to the contactpoints on the right side. that way you could skip the custom sony battery.

I have the MZ-E20 and the MZR-30 portable minidisc player/recorder , and minidisc i love it to , greetings from Assen in the Netherlands !!

Nice little video, you earned a sub from me :) I found you because i just recently got into Mini discs again! Was a big user of them back in the day.
I really love the format and also kept one in working condition ( one that you also had in your collection ) that my son ( 6 years old) use  alot and love.
But so i wanted to get one of the later premium models now, and got onto the internet to find the "right" one to begin with. I opted for the Mz-909r i think its called, similar to the 900 model you showed late in your vid.
I was a bit unlucky with it having some corrosion on the battery door to the Gum stick battery. It works but is glitching now and then and will say battery is out of charge when that happens. So a little annoying, but have the external pack as well. Also a friend of mine is going to try and clean the door from the corrosion and maybe it will work even better in future.
Other than that its a beautiful machine with amazing sound!
Right after i got a MZ-707 Net MD walkman which is incoming in a day or two, and some blank discs to record on, happy days :D
Great watch! And always fun to see other people sharing the love for beautiful tactile older stuff from back in the day. A abit sad to see the MD format go as its so pleasant to use.
But at least we can now relive it a little longer hehe.
/Martin.

What a cool collection !
I jumped on the mp3 player bandwagon quite soon in 99 with the diamond Rio 500 ( third mp3 player ever) and defended my choice to death but secretly was so jealous of my friends with the MD players and their flexibility /expandability.😅

Now the MZ-R700PC is the only MD player in my retro tech collection ( the original player of my wife) and I love it … I definitely made the wrong choice back in the day :)
