Back when Disney was mostly making cookie-cutter shows for kids, there came a show that broke the mould. Released in 1994, Gargoyles was a mind-blowing blend of mythology, history and folklore, and told the story of Goliath and his gargoyle clan, who had been betrayed and petrified in 994. They would only be freed from the curse if the castle they were trapped in rose above the clouds. David Xanatos bought Castle Wyvern and moved it to the top of a New York skyscraper called the Eyrie Building, fulfilling the condition of the spell. Goliath and his clan came back to life, and with their human ally Elisa Maza, a cop, they dealt with the evils of New York City, protecting humans and gargoyles alike. Goliath’s clan not only had to deal with sinister businessmen and gang members but also with Demona, a complicated antagonist who is Angela’s mother and was once part of Goliath’s clan. The show was entertaining, to say the least, and many people, including myself, were disappointed when it wrapped up in just three seasons. Turns out, our wounded hearts will be met with some balm as Gargoyles is back with a new Dynamite comic book series, written by Greg Weisman, who was one of the creators of the original show, and illustrated by Gerardo Gambone, whose work you might recognize from the comics American Yakuza, Gargoyles: Quest, and Nightmare in Wonderland. The first issue starts off hot with a major tramway accident and a missing egg. Let’s dive right into this thrilling adventure! (Dynamite Disney)
