We finally sat down for Gangs of New York (2002), and this movie is way messier, louder, and more unhinged than we were ready for. Instead of doing a scene‑by‑scene recap, we talk about how Bill the Butcher hijacks every frame, which moments actually made us go quiet, and where we landed on that ending after almost three hours in Five Points. We get into whether the accents work, how brutal is “too brutal” for us, what aged weirdly, and if this really deserves the “modern classic” label it has online.

Yall nut's. this was a masterpiece. No direction? please. It moves through the story fluidity depicting that era with such detailed historical information & great characters representing actual figures perfectly reflecting the mentality of that place and time. Leo returns wrestling with his lifelong desire for revenge but must hide it in order to fit into Day Lewis's world. Both acters were intensely powerful as well as the entire cast. Never a dull scene and always great dialogue.

Bill the Butcher, Daniel Day Lewis. The undisputed master of acting. Nobody has ever been, or will ever be, a fraction as talented as he is. I nearly cried when he announced his retirement.

52:01 before the Panama Canal travel by boat was long, but probably safer than braving the mountains and wilderness.

Weren't you listening? He tried to kill Bill at the celebration purposefully. He literally said, "You don't kill a king in the dark; you kill him in the court where everyone can see." All your questions in the middle of the movie were answered in the beginning. What's his goal? His goal was to get as close to Bill as possible, lower his guard, and strike at the right moment. What's going on with him and Jenny? He liked her but he "Wasn't interested in the Butcher's leavings (sloppy seconds)." After a while, he couldn't fight his feelings for her.

@19:30 I like that we "Portugeezee" get an honorary mention in the film—from Bill the Butcher, no less. 😄

Five points is underground now, but lower east side Manhattan. Basically, Chinatown today with new road structure. The square isn't there any more.

Yes, majority of Civil War fighting was South. There were a few stages. Early was close to the US-Confederate border on the East Coast: Maryland (within sight of Washington DC), Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia. Middle period spread to the lower Mississippi River: Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri. Also Kentucky/Tennessee. Later closed in on the Confederate core in the Southeast.

Check out a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) Adventure/Drama/History. It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armand Assante, Michael Wincott. It portrays the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples. Soundtrack by Vangelis. Directed by Ridley Scott. A film by Ridley Scott.

The Riot was real. The New York Draft riots are one of the biggest urban civil unrests in USA history. It lasted 3 days and was primarily committed by Irish immigrants againsts African Americans, Protestant and Rich people who where able to buy there way out of the draft. The riots only ended when ironicly predominantly Irish military units fresh from the battle of Gettysburg engaged the remaining rioters who hadn't dispersed near Gramercy Park.

DDL in ANYTHING is a spoiling the audience. If you're in a movie with Leo DiCaprio and no one's talking about him by the end of the movie you're one of, if not the GOAT.
