.50 Alaskan, when your Grizzly Bear decides to up armor to a tank.

I had Harry McGowen make up a 71 for me back in the 90’s. 22”barrel. Mine shoots the 450 grain Barnes really well. Harry claimed the Lyman 500 plain base 50 grains of 3031 was a tack driver and always recommended it to his customers. I actually took BMG bullets and cut them off like Harold did but that’s an other story.

The 435 grain bullet with velocity of 2089fps the muzzle energy is 4216 ft.lbs. African worthy. (Per Hodgdon Reloading data.)

Those bullets have a meplate like the bottom of a dinner plate!   I have no doubt they do work well on even the largest bears.   I've experimented with large meplate cast bullets from custom molds the past 3 deer seasons in 32 Special and 35 Remington and it really convinced me that a bullet doesn't have to be pointed and at high velocity to be very effective.     The 50 Alaskan however is in a whole 'nother class as you stated!

This is the first time I have seen one of your videos. It provides great information and is a fun look at a caliber I did not know about.

When I lived in AK in the mid 80's, I got to drive  right by Johnson's shop in Cooper's Landing. It was there all by itself and still in decent shape for its age. Still had his sign  up above the entry door. I'm not sure, but I might even have a pic or two that I took.

@DaveMiciewicz me too - and I use Brian's suggested loads for 44 Special, 44 Mag and 45 Colt.  Great review of an interesting round and lever guns!

How does the Buffalo Bore 525 grain compare to the Garrett 540 grain?
