Putting profits before people is never going to work in European countries.

In Europe, dumping is illegal. Dumping is selling below the cost value. That's what happened with walmart in Germany.

In Europe people are accustomed to shop at their local small family shops like bakeries, butchers, and greengrocer's, many of which are within walking, or short cycling, distance. Also, the sense of supporting their local community is very strong and the people have known each other for years, have been classmates or are just friends.

McDonalds in Denmark for 5 years refused to make a deal with the Unions, before they realized, either they did it, or they would have to leave the country. Today these are the conditions for danish McDonalds workers: 37H work week, anything above is overtime pay,  an average of 22$/H, ca. 43.000$ a year. 7 weeks fully paid vacation/holidays per year. Fully paid sick leave, 1 year of paid parental leave + 11% on top of the pay put into a retirement fond.

The main problem American companies have in expanding beyond national borders is that the rest of the world doesn't allow companies to treat their workforces like slaves. We value our freedom here and there are laws regarding treatment of workforces that would blow American minds.

In America you can buy weapons and ammunition in the supermarket, but you can't drink beer if you're under 21? But you can go to war for your country, how crazy is that?

Dominoes closed all its stores in Austria 2 days ago. ETA: I just googled because I was curious - the first dominoes store opened up in Vienna in 2017. I can proudly say, I've never eaten a Dominoes pizza and I definitely will not miss having another american chain in my city

US business models tend to be built around strip-mining the public good to make private gains, including exploiting workers and leaving external effects for society and the government to clean up.   But in Europe, the good of the general public, workers and consumers rights, environmental impacts, etc, are actively protected.   That is one of the core reasons why even though Europe in terms of nominal value on paper has smaller economic numbers, its people can enjoy a higher quality of life.

IT'S A MATTER OF PHILOSOPHY, here in Europe, we value people above money.  To us, money is only a tool, not a religion.  We care for one another.  Humanity is FAR more important than making a profit, in fact much of our most successful projects make no money at all and actually cost money that we all pay for in taxation.  Healthcare is the most obvious.

Walmart (and others) did not even look into European employment law. Walmart tried to ban employees from having relationships which is a gross overreach because an employer has no rights whatsoever to tell employees what to do outside working hours. They also tried to ban unions when German law clearly states that any employer with more than 25 employees must have a union representative as a permanent member of the management board. Consequently Walmart got sued and lost in every instance. Also their team building exercises were extremely creepy and cult like.

Sodding hell. It's a brave move to take mass-produced pizza to Italy.
Did they not think the locals might look at it somewhat askance?
Top effort Dominos, if we were awarding points for suicide missions.

I worked for a large European company who had a subcontractor, a SW company, which developed a crucial piece of SW for the larger company. This SW company was bought by
an American  company who started their ownership by firing a pregnant woman. Mutiny broke out among the employees and my company had to intervene and eventually
bought out the Americans.

European countries and I am adding Canada to this are quite surprised about  the lack of European, Canadian and Wold history not being taught in US grammar and high schools.  It makes a big difference.

I hate when I shop and retail workers are bothering me.

Walmart couldn't follow regulations in the UK and had to leave. They didn't operate under the Walmart Brand but purchased Asda which was the third biggest chain in the Uk at the time. They managed to wreck what was a good business. They weren't used to being taken to court and they didn't like it. More than happy to see them have to withdraw. Terrible company!
The UK is a very capitalist country but Walmart are like human vampires!

There is a nice comparison possible: You know how the USA food business works, right? Your food is generally bought with 'fresh ingredients', but the way factory food is made in the USA according to different rules: If the ingredients are cheaper, and the authorities let that happen, you get rules like 'how many rat droppings can we ignore,  to make it legal?. OR, 'how many factory made chemicals can you put in a sausage'. The USA is on its way to see 'Soilent Green' as a food product. In if you don't know what that means, watch the movie. Basically, it is the story how old people get converted to food.

Rules and regulations are designed to protect the people, the employees, the environment etc from the rich, the big corporations etc from exploiting and or bullying. They can't use their money, their size etc to destroy lives, smaller businesses or the environment. The 'regulations' are in place to ensure that everyone is treated with respect, that no-one can exploit or destroy just for Profit. We care about people and the environment far more than big corporations and their Profit margins....

We actually have a Domino's here in Northern Bavaria, Germany... in my town of 55,000 people...
But we don't really go there—why would we? We're just a little way north of Italy, and we have soooo many Italians in the area who've opened gelaterias and pizzerias. Why would we want Domino's when we can have the REAL food? G

The US operates by wanting to run at low cost to make more money. That means not paying well. That is not the value proposition in Europe. In Europe there are social regulations as quality of life is more important than making money if it impacts the quality of life of the employees.

There's two types of freedom.
The US freedom to... (eg fire someone for no good reason)
The European freedom from...(eg being fired for no good reason)

The latter position is logical as it usually favours the largest proportion of the people, especially with things like food standards.
