Hi everyone, that is me and my frame in the video!

Can I just say a massive thank you to PT for undertaking this repair in the depths of winter, and this frame has come out absolutely perfect.

I've been riding the frame now for the last 3 months leading up to the 70.3 and of course rode it on the day of the race itself.  I think since the repair, it is probably 9% stiffer than last year before it was fixed (iykyk - PT merch). It of course, performed flawlessly for the race, and after the race ended, PT himself even gave it a little shakedown ride with a few kerb jumps and he was satisfied with it.

I am also planning on leaving the carbon repair on show for as long as the frame lives on - it will be displayed proudly , with a good story to tell. May the frame (and the repair) keep me company for many more miles in the years to come.

the emotion seeing a pure "theory" engineer guy doing real stuff with hands

As a material scientist and a bike mechanic I want to say that is an awesome job and a great save of a frame that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Also it always refreshing to see "academic" guys who are willing to put their teachings into practice: guys who possess a deep understanding of the theory together with good manual skills are needed in the complex and technologically advanced world we live in. Exceptional!  Been doing Carbon Repairs for past 10 years..each repair is a new challenge/learning experience.  Your attention to detail is 100%. Go for perfection and then will get a decent job as circumstances generally mean one falls short. Result then pretty good,personally would trust you with my Carbon frame as much as any Carbon repair shop.

Joke aside, you know what ? It's kinda cool this "thing" of having a bare carbon part on a painted frame ! It even looks quite good haha. Nice job, maybe as you said, you could have wrapped it in a more "cylindrical" way to avoid sharp edge at the finish stage in the vacuum, but overall looks pretty good. And most of all, a saved frame which will not go to the bin

this looks like a really good DIY repair, don't sell yourself short. well done.

Never in a month of Sundays was that initial repair going to hold, good job. The clearcoat over the exposed repair is also dominant move.

Overcoming the sheer pain-in-the-assery for this project is amazing to me.  It's quite inspiring to see what can be done with determination, effort and knowledge.

I guess the leak was thru the frame. I mean air get inside the tube and thru the foam and filler into the bag. Anyway I would say u did a really good job not only with the fix but with the explaining all of this. It will probably outlive all of us. Cheers

So glad they left the repair naked.

Done a similar repair on my top tube but just used easy composites 'fishing pole repair kit'
3 layers of 90gsm 1k weave, heat shrink tape, job done ✔️
It's not pretty (not even bothered painting it on my winter bike) but it's SOLID, taking it off road to test and been good for 2 years now 👍

I am just getting more involved in this carbon repair side of things and I really enjoy it. I did some composites in school on aircraft many years ago to get my foundation built to a point where I now trust my own repairs... ;)
And thank you for doing such a thorough video of this process so we can all see what really goes in to this and appreciate the labour involved.

The repair almost enhances the look of the bike I think. The exposed carbon looks quite cool!

I do know the safety risks. But the bike was like this from the very start. No parts are damaged. The assembly results, are indicating that all the play in the front fork, is the result of missing fork assembly. And I'm still after all this time trying to localise these parts. That's all i wanted to say.

Fascinating video. For a non-expert that looks exceptionally well done. The weave section on the top tube looks pretty cool too.

Love watching these repair video's on what looks impossible to me. Trek Amonda's are super light...nice job.

i love the enthusiasm for engineering here and listening to the layup details. I did my final year engineering thesis on carbon fibre composites under 3 point bending and axial loading but must admit I do not remember a damn thing except that we destroyed thousands of dollars worth of carbon 😢
