Great tips! Social media is a minefield. It has changed a lot, I also feel is important is using social media to get people onto your newsletter. For me that feels like a place where you can connected with people that have already bought your work or commissioned you. And it’s non algorithm based…

I've been following you for years, and your content helped me become a professional children's book illustrator. Anytime I feel like I need help, I come to your profiles and always leave with a fresh perspective. Thank you for what you do, I owe you so much! 🦋

i hate social media. Its all fake and tons of work that I as a professional artist don't really have time with... it sounds easy and all when doing it fulltime but once you're busy actually doing art then this becomes like a second job.

These tips may indeed be effective to grow as far as # of followers but it seems as though the majority of these suggestions would naturally attract other artists. This seems to be the artist trap on social media. We get to a point where we mostly follow other artists and other artists follow us and its sort of screaming into an echo chamber of tips and tricks and tutorials and speed paints and WIP's. Its engaging but unless your intention is to sell courses, it feels like the wrong direction to take. There is some validity to the "show yourself"  line of thinking and that people are more interested in buying into you as a person as well as you the artist. What are some more strategies along those lines? How can we best reach potential buyers as apposed to other artists who like our work?

This makes me so depressed. I hate that we have to feed the big tech algorithms on their terms. Our work just becomes a part of the infinite churn of 'content'. Just another word for the slurry they use to keep people addicted. It all sucks so much.

Thank you so much for this! I’ve been struggling with instagram lately! I bought your book btw! I’m a huge fan of yours! Love form Japan 🇯🇵

7:54 aww it's a cute kitty! I couldn't see it because it blended into your shirt lol 😂

Thanks again for the awesome advice James! I'll be rewatching this video later and making notes for sure! I've tried to get more active on the socials with the content I can create and, fingers crossed, it'll start paying off and get my work in front of some of the right people

I am trying but I feel very inadequate 😅 this information was very helpful! Thank you for being kind!

I actually cannot imagine you clapping back in a way that would require apology, surprising indeed, lol. I like the tip about reading something and posting about what I've learned- room for sarcasim there as well

Apparently IG is rolling out support for 3:4 still images now ...

thats very nice information thank you, now im not going to do anything of that, i rather not growth in social media xd

I'm trying to return to social media as an illustrator after dropping out for the past 2 years, and this video came up in my search. I was really hoping to find this list written out somewhere, so many amazing tips here, but I can't seem to find the LinkedIn article he references. Does anyone know if he followed through on wiritng it?

Nice tips, I’ve seen you showing up more on Insta too. I’m learning more about video/youtube this summer - lots to learn but it’s fun. I’ve decided that even video can be like a sketchbook; a process, imperfect, visual snippets,…

I never went on social media, I should have, it would have helped me alot...but now its all swamped with Ai slop , I cant make myself seen!

The biggest and the worst problem for an emerging artist on social media is scammers posing as buyers.

These people prey on new artists who are eager to sell their work and build a following.

While you’re genuinely trying to grow your account and make a living from your creativity, these scammers steal your money or your artwork and crush your enthusiasm and confidence.

13:00 im not even near a 1000 followers but i have trial reels

there's nothing worse than being a mediocre artist, posting their original works,  trying to find a community on social media nowadays..

Hey! Loved your content 🔥 If you ever need a custom YouTube  thumbnails to make your channel stand out, I’d love to help you with that. Let me know!"

The whole thing about the definition of artist is warped. This is not the artist purpose to market himself or to become a salesman. The point of being an artist is that you cannot be anyone else on this planet and you have something to say to a world, society, making this world stop and think for once or show the morals or the beauty of this universe. Marketers should do marketing, sm guys should compete for attention, pay the artists tributes for the opportunity of showing their work etc. Galleries should advertise in order to make a commission. We are too soft and we give up ourselves for nothing, the whole art market is a huge money laundering scam. And nothing can be done to stop this.
