Horrible people doing horrible things to each other.  It was exhausting.

Based on his lifestyle,  Niall clearly wanted to die.

The Wuthering Heights we deserved

I like that in the end killing Nial and getting his grand revenge wasn't even cathartic, being defined by your trauma is just a misery treadmill.

Half Man is ultimately a tragedy about attachment, not romance. The series suggests that people can become central to each other’s lives without fully understanding what they mean to one another.

Niall and Ruben spend years borrowing from each other what they lack themselves. Niall is drawn to Ruben’s strength, confidence, masculinity, and ability to occupy space without apology. Ruben relies on Niall’s empathy, understanding, emotional safety, and acceptance.

Ruben’s feelings toward Niall seem less romantic than existential. Niall becomes family, trust, belonging, and the one person Ruben believes will never betray him. That’s why the revelation about Mona and the child devastates him. The wound is not just infidelity—it is the collapse of his identity as a husband, father, and man.

At the same time, Ruben likely feels he sacrificed part of his life for Niall. From his perspective, he carried loyalty, trust, and shared history, only to discover that the person he trusted most had violated the most important relationship in his life. The betrayal destroys not only his trust in Niall, but the meaning he attached to his own sacrifices.

The tragedy is that each man takes something from the other. Niall takes Ruben’s sense of fatherhood, trust, certainty, and masculine identity. Ruben takes Niall’s sense of safety, autonomy, and ultimately his future. Neither leaves the relationship whole.

The barn scene shows two people finally telling the truth, only to discover that truth cannot save them. The confession doesn’t resolve the tension; it makes it unbearable. By the end, the series argues that love, loyalty, understanding, and attachment are not enough to heal trauma or fix a broken sense of self.

The tragedy is not that they couldn’t be together. The tragedy is that they meant so much to each other and still destroyed each other.

If we're talking about who's to blame, I'd say Niall's mother made the terrible decision to bring her partner's son into her home, knowing what he was like. She prioritized her own happiness and wanted to satisfy her partner's needs over protecting her son from a bad influence.
It's incredible how one person can cause permanent damage to another through the decisions they make. We are the product of our past traumas, and part of growing up is knowing how to manage them so they don't affect us to the extent this series portrays.

This series is a masterpiece. The plot and the acting are incredibile, I'm still shaken. It’s been years since a show has moved me so deeply.

It was so beautifully and devastatingly Shakespearean in the way that it invoked conflicting impulses in me as a viewer: I wanted Niall to keep the affair a secret, but I was also resigned to the inevitability of his confession.

It’s so bad that Ruben experienced sexual abuse as a child that changed the course of his life. Then he sexually assaulted Niall and it altered him as well. Niall had an unhealthy attachment to Ruben the rest of his life.

In my view, Niall is the victim of Ruben. They both ruin each other's lives, yes, but the power Ruben holds over Niall's life is not parallel to the power Niall holds over Ruben's. There's nothing that exemplifies this more to me than the wedding scene where Niall has to look at Ruben to get permission to marry Alby. Niall's life revolves around Ruben, and whenever Niall fights back it's subversive, defiant, pushing Ruben's boundaries. Whenever Ruben fights Niall it's to assert his control and his power over him.

Niall is not a "good person" by any measure. His actions hurt Alby, Ruben, Mona, his mother, practically every person he encounters. But there's nobody Niall hurts more than himself. The same isn't true for Ruben. Ruben acts, often aggressively and violently, to preserve what he sees as his own dignity, power, status, and masculinity. Niall, because of his inability to accept himself and get out from under Ruben's thumb, and because of his overpowering fear and feeling of walking on eggshells around Ruben, acts almost entirely to destroy his own dignity and his own identity to fit inside the box that Ruben (mostly) constructed for him and that Niall himself maintains.

It's far from a textbook case of abuse, but many instances of abuse are weedy, unique, and far from clear-cut. To me, the preponderance of the evidence points towards Niall being more of the victim here, and Ruben bearing more of the blame. It's worth noting that in the end, it's Ruben who kills Niall and Ruben's death only comes from Niall's futile attempt at fighting back (or, depending on how you want to interpret it, Ruben's own hand). You may personally dislike Niall and his ratty little personality more than Ruben and his thirst for power, and that's okay. And the abuse inflicted on Ruben by his father explains a lot of his behaviour, but it doesn't excuse it. Overall, I think to deny that Ruben holds an incredible and asymmetrical amount of power over Niall is missing the point.

WHY THE FUCK WOULD HE TELL HIM HE SLEPT WITH MONA??!!

Niall oddly gave Ruben a child or the opportunity of being a father in a messed up way

I think that Niall and Ruben are two sides of the same coin. Ruben shows his damage on the outside while Niall’s is internal, Ruben’s rage destroys his life but Niall self sabotages. It’s a tragic story of codependency and what can happen if you don’t get rid of toxicity in your life.

2 totally different versions of hurt people… and unfortunately hurt people hurt people
Ruben took it out on others
Niall took it out on himself- yet also managed to be the main source of hurt for Ruben

absolutely captivating performance from Gadd. From the overall writing to the portrayal of Ruben it was a masterclass. Also huge shoutout to Stuart Campbell as young Ruben. Also know that we know the whole story, re-watching it will also be a pleasure. The ending may have been slightly disappointing but what I will remember is the intense acting from both those characters.

I rewatched the first two episodes. The only person Ruben was afraid of was his father. In the first episode, he was terrified when his father stood under the windows. In the second episode, when Ruben was dancing with Niall, he said his father had a new baby and couldn't let him win custody.

I did trauma therapy for years. There are times where the offender and the victim become emeshed as the gate keepers of dark and shaming secrets that will result in others perceiving the offender and victim in a new demeaning spotlight. For males it can be the fear of being judged as less masculine or a poor image of a father or respected community figures. For women it becomes a new type of alienation or lack of understanding. It's sad how trauma manifests throughout life in regards to addiction, failed marriages, unstable mental health, or the emotional disconnect from others. People struggle to really understand just how self destructive the keeping of traumatic secrets can be. It's a stronger bond than most people realize.

The series was magnificent.  Their acting, especially Richard Gadd.  Holy crap.  He was mesmerizing.  I new pretty early on that they would both die at the end.  I just wasn't exactly sure who would kill who first and how!  WOW!  What an ending.  There were points in the episodes where I had to pause the recording and take a break.  Then take a breath and start watching again.  It was that emotionally horrifying, brilliant.  Richard Gadd wrote that...he wrote that monstrosity of a story....Unbelievable.

Still Processing is really the only way I can describe it too..Like damn.. I mean I could tell they wouldn't come out of it alive but like...damn

The problem is their mother’s kind of parenting .
Sad
