I worked at Booths from 1997 to 1999...started at 16 and earned £2.32 an hour. Had to get in for 6am to put out all the milk. When I started it was so old fashioned and we had to input the prices ourselves on the till. When someone arrived with a trolley load of shopping you'd roll your eyes as it took 10 mins to put it all through as you typed the prices in! All the food was from Lancashire/Cumbria/Yorkshire and I would gorge on sweet treats during my lunchbreaks  (I think I ate a whole lemon Swiss roll one day) It was a special time...much gentler than today! It wasn't quite as posh as it is now!

Plum bread toasted with salted butter spread on it!

So glad someone else found Booths amazing!!
I thought I was overreacting but now I know it's not just me 😂😂😂

What a lovely video, and i just have to comment on how healthy you’re looking, whatever you’re doing it’s working wonders for you. 😊

Chorley cakes spread with butter and have after a meal or just with a cuppa. They have currants in and are sweet.
Mum used to use left over pastry rolled out handful of currants a bit of sugar and a knob of butter. Pinched the edges together turned over rolled into a round. Flat cake no waste.  😊

'The international section' - then pans up to the Fray Bentos pies 😂 That absolutely sent me lol

I was one of their lorry driver for a few years, brilliant company to work for and cracking food.

Those of us who are British and never even heard of booths before this 👇

I shopped at Booths 40 years ago when we lived near Lancaster.  It was a great supermarket!  The best!  I don’t remember seeing local souvenirs there just food products.  Nice to see them expanding into other areas.  I wish we had one near where I live now.  Better than M&S or Waitrose imo!

Love shopping at Booths especially around Christmas

Booths is the North West’s best kept secret and their Christmas food catalogue is something else 😊

As Americans who love Britain it is worth reading the book 'Albion' s Seed'.... Also if you can get the Alec Clifton Taylor dvds (3 or 4) on English Towns, Pevsner's books on the counties and Gavin Stamp's Lost cities... As well as Sir John Betjeman's books and documentaries. If you want to find the best Scotch Whisky... Then search Great Taste Awards or other awards for Scotch whisky and there will be various suggestions... Go for the smoothest!

Talisker or Dalmore single malt whisky are my favourites

Cartmel is a lovely place with a beautiful priory church

Favourite Caribbean trifle recipe (made every Christmas for Boxing Day).
Slice a Madeira loaf (cake) and spread each slice with lemon curd and place the slices on the bottom and sides of your trifle bowl. Pour over approx 100ml of rum and leave it to soak into you sponge. Chop up a couple of mangoes and put the chopped mango on top of the sponge with the seeds and juice of 2-3 passion fruit. Cover the fruit and sponge with egg custard and leave to set. Once cooled and set, top with whipped cream and some more passion fruit.
I make my custard using 2 eggs and a 1-2 tablespoons of sugar to a pint of milk. A teaspoon of cornflour helps to prevent the egg custard curdling as you cook it. I make my custard in the microwave, instead of the stove top, taking it out frequently to stir it until it thickens up.
Curry…if I’m making it at home I use spices, as I have them in my cupboard, but if we are away on our boat I’ll use a jar of curry sauce, as I don’t want to store spices on the boat.

Booths is only found in 4 counties in northern England - Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. It prides itself on providing as many local and quality products as possible and is generally seen as on a par with Waitrose for quality. Try some of the locally produced jams and curds (I just bought a passion fruit one), maybe with some crumbly Lancashire cheese or Wensleydale. Their ready roast chicken and homemade pies are delicious, perhaps washed down with one of the hundreds of local ales. On your cheese baps, you could warm them in the oven and add thick slices of ham, mustard, mayonnaise and gherkins or some nice chutney. You have to get a tote bag too - There's one that says This Charming Flan on one side 😂. Be warned, they're addictive and you'll end up with the whole collection 😀

We have a family trifle recipe which (I believe) was an invention of my husband's great grandmother. We think it's the best lol.
Lady fingers spread with raspberry jam and soaked with lots of sherry in the bottom of your bowl.
Canned of fresh raspberries layered on top.
Sliced bananas form the next layer.
Pour over homemade custard and sprinkle with desiccated coconut to prevent a 'skin' forming.
Allow to cool before finishing with a good layer of whipped cream topped off with toasted flaked almonds. Yummy!

Booths are based in Preston and most of their shops are in Lancashire.  The ones I have used are in Yorkshire, at Ilkley and Settle, they also have one in Ripon I believe, one in Cheshire and a couple in the Lake District.  There used to be one at Salford Media Coty near Manchester, but that one closed.  Much of their meat and fresh produce is sourced from local farms in Lancashire.  They only have about 27 stores, most of which are attractive modern buildings, but the company has a long history, from memory I think it goes back to the 1940s.  I think it’s by far the best supermarket chain in Britain, but nowhere London where I live.

I make a bee line for Booths any time I'm in the NW! I'd love for them to venture down south.
