Testing Our BIGGEST Weapon Yet!

Tod's Workshop

148,703 views

Weird Weapons - a simple concept in that Matt can use weapons and I can make them, so I find something unusual from history, make it and hand it to Matt to test it.

Today is a 9ft/2.7m partisan spear with a 40"/100cm blade and we viciously attack some innocent melons, a mail clad figure and the shield he is holding.

Tod "I want to sell this at some point"

I think the spear would penetrate much further if the mannequin had the mass of a man.

@Terminal_Indolence 4 months ago

That thing would be a menace to light cavalry. Poor horses.

It does look like the sort of thing you would want guards or bodyguards using, much like a great sword. Its impressive, intimidating, will hack an angry mob to pieces, and can be used to keep multiple oponents at bay and to control space while its still functional in combat as mainly a thrusting weapon.

When I was in the armory of the Doge’s Palace in Venice, they had a number of cool glaives - basically falchions on a stick. The shaft had rectangular cross sections, with the longer side in the same plane as the blade. I wonder if that would make it easier to hack and slash with this style of spear.

Big blade on a long stick is a classic for a reason.

Spear…I’m in…BIGGEST SPEAR EVER….SOLD! Haha great job guys that was incredibly fun

@stoatystoat174 4 months ago

Compared to other spears and pole-arms it looks like it would be very hard for opponent to grab. And still with pointy lever dangers if they got a hand past the blade to grab it

If Shaft brakes, you grub it by the socket and use it as a Sword...

A one inch hole in your arm? "not terrible, not great."

I love this thing. It certainly makes an intuitive sense that there would be weapons that sort of exist on a spectrum between categories as distinct as "SPEAR" and "PARTISAN." Whether they happened in a historical time of transition when maybe the idea of the partisan had not fully been realized yet OR it was simply a matter of an armorer/soldier wanting a less conventional weapon for whatever reason, I would think these sorts of experiments would happen.

The words “shall we call it a day with that one?” The meaning. “please, please don’t give me a few more hours darning mail?”

Looks like a swordstaff, but without a guard.

people back then: "let's put a sword on a stick lol!"
Tod now : "Let's put a sword on a stick and give it to matt easton lol"

0:33 That is a giants arrow, if I ever seen one...

It looks a lot like a Japanese Ōmi yari, although the Japanese version are not as wide at the base of the blade

That shield has seen things. Many weapons of all types. Yet it still works as a shield.

This looks like a type of swordstaff. Swordstaffs (at least the ones with straight swords) were used in ancient China and northern Europe. LK Chen has a recreation of the Han Dynasty swordstaff called the "sha."
