10:10 my favorite thing about the great ones being linked to slugs is that it leaves me thinking they’re basically the bugs of whatever world they come from.

This video sparked the realization that there is a strong connection between the recent Frankenstein movie and Bloodborne. Both emphasize and critique the callous brutality of science of the early modern period. They point out that the assumptions of the time could not be separated from how the research was carried out or who the subjects of the experiments were.

A theory: Ludwig died as a human and only became a beast after being in the Hunter's Nightmare as punishment for association with Byrgenwyrth. Gehrman speaks of Ludwig respectfully, and he's the only beast to regain his sense of self (after being exposed to the light of his sword).

I was literally talking with my partner yesterday about how bloodborne puts a Lot of effort into critiquing lovecraft's xenophobia and racism. Fastastic video~!

Tarnished Archeologist for, well archaeology, and now I found a biologist. Fuck yeah.

Personally I believe that Kos is the most beautiful Great Ones, both aesthetically and "morally", and one of Miyazaki's classic reversals: The "Danzel in distress" (Dusk/The Child Painter) is also the monster, but not an evil one, while the "Good Church knights", Laurence and Lugwig are true monsters, even if both tragic in a sort of way,  and the "Evil keeper of the Nightmare" is nothing but a crying child and a Mother's rage. (Fun fact, "Orphan of Kos" in Japanese can also be translated as "Last Will of Kos" or "Echoes of Kos" similarly as "Echoes of Blood" also translate as "Last wills in the blood". This means that what we face is not the real baby, taken by Laurence during the massacre, but the embodiment of Kos' anger through the distorted shape of her baby.

P.s: True, the real horror in this story comes from humans in their attempt to reach the Great Ones, at some point even usign and abusing them. The Brain, chained on a tower, Ebrietas, working with the Choir but stuck in a cave and probably tricked, Flora still waiting for the baby Laurence promised and Kos, killed or at least her child stolen. It's also pretty funny at the end when there is a big probability Great Ones once were all humans.

Bloodborne lore from Storm King, what an absolute treat.

17:41 It is actually Father Dagon and Mother Hydra that resides there. R'lyeh, where Cthulu resides, is in the South Pacific, not the North Atlantic.

It's a common mistake to mix this up, just wanted to help.

14:50 I kinda think the bugmen, while probably trying to imitate Rom, actually more resemble failed versions of the Amygdala - they have similar orange bug-eyes and extra appendages like the Amygdala's limbs, and their skin tones are nearly a match.

Lovecraft's beings aren't hostile to humanity, but indifferent. The only one who could be seen as hostile is Nyarlathotep.

Congratulations on the graduate studies:) I'll be following behind you next year. What an ode to the art of the nightmare

I love Bloodborne. The way is mixes Gothic and Cosmic horror together is just perfection.

Let us be honest here. Sony cant be this blind to not see that a bloodborne remake with pc port would be a gold mine. I mean to this day people are talking about the game. Great video btw

11:56 I would like to add another possible inspiration for Call Beyond. The head seems to be inspired by a sea angel (𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘢). These small sea snails live in the water column and have six protractile tentacles (called buccal cones) that they use to capture prey. The fact that Call Beyond is depicted in a “hunting” position and that its effect is to create arcane spheres that chase their target, as if hunting it down, gives me the feeling that this sea slug was a source of inspiration not only in terms of aesthetics...

Oh it's this video! Just saw the artist of the Mother Kos piece in the thumbnail post about how this was the first time someone had tracked them down for permission the other day! Thanks for the cool and interesting video!

"cultivation" of the self (in relation to the shelled children of kos,) is likely related to the chinese (of various philosophical schools) to become a sage, or otherwise someone to be looked up to as example. It is also said to be a way of attaining enlightenment, immortality, etc.

but the dual meaning of cultivation is so very bloodborne. Metamorphosed humans who reach an enlightened state also being used for food, whether to pass on to a higher state of being, or to pass that state of mind on to their people, or simply because they are sustenance, is so terrific and nihilistic in its eldritch cosmicam

That xenophobia and racism is also shown in the old Yharnam and the way people behind doors treat the hunter with so much disdain. From start to finish those themes are woven into the world.

I truly believe the people of the hamlet loved kos. By the way they mourn her, she was their goddess. An old one who acknowledged them, at least with a shred of her vast mind. It makes her physical forms death that much sadder

0:28 ARCANE MENTIONED

one Bloodborne theory I find really interesting is one I found from a video (I can't remember the creators name). they theorized that the thing that was guiding Ludwig was actually a parasite in his eye, which is a pretty common target for parasites that parasitize various groups of animals (snails, Greenland sharks, there's well known cases of humans getting parasites in their eyes).
I also wanna say, when I become a paleontologist I'm going to name a Cambrian animal after kos, I just have to lol.
last thing, but I really love the trope of people corrupting Eldritch entities and causing them to do so much harm as a result of the specific characters evil, one of my favorite visual novels centers around that and I only realized Bloodborne has a theme of that last year.
