2:00 particles have a minimum radius because if there are green particles that attract eachother, and like, 500 green particles are grouped together, then all 500 of them will be interacting with all 499 others every frame. If you put a minimum distance, they'll get close to eachother and then stop spamming calculations

Hey, I watch your channel, so it was cool to see you mention this! There was a detail in my original source code that wasn't mentioned in my original video, so it didn't make it into most other implementations. I always kept the diagonal of the matrix repulsive-only, so every particle must repel itself. This avoids the unstable 'stars' and produces more organic behavior. Otherwise, the instability is more of a simulation quirk, not an actual consequence of the rules. So running the simulation at a different timestep can produce drastically different results and different critical masses. But it's still interesting, and I guess the laws of physics are already out the window anyway so it just comes down to preference.

The thing that actually makes stars unstable is the Depth Limit setting, which makes particles repel each other if there's too many on the same spot

In some simulations, you can see natural selection happen. Some types are easier to make spontaneously, but they aren't as stable and break apart. Sometimes you get more complex systems, and those can be more stable or less depending on the pieces. In some simulations, you even see cells splitting apart and forming 2 individuals

I’ve been doing life + particle sim stuff recently and it’s been neat but this is so much more visually fun and behaviourally richer than what I’ve been trying, really good stuff!

Some of the most interesting types of behavior was one "species" actively sterring and moving towards sertain other "species" and absorb their particles. The 3D simulator is super intersting to watch as well, as sometimes you get cool wiggly worms and other movement.

I have seen people building similar simulations, but I have not seen someone give such clarity into why the different possible forms (blobs, snakes, spaceships) turn into each other under certain conditions. This is a wonderful video. Thank you so much!
