■ Although the aviation market is reviving with a surge in air traffic and passenger numbers, the reality for aspiring pilots remains bleak. Despite investing a massive amount of time and money (approximately 100 million KRW) to obtain a commercial pilot license, the threshold for employment has become extremely narrow due to the impact of the sharp decline in new hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic and a backlog of applicants.

In fact, compared to the increase in license holders over the past decade, the number of those actually employed by airlines falls far short. The industry estimates that there are at least 4,000 to 5,000 "flight vagrants" (unemployed pilots). Due to the preference for experienced pilots, issues regarding airline mergers, and the limitations of indiscriminate pilot training policies, an increasing number of individuals are giving up on their dreams or switching to other professions to make a living.

While expectations for a recovery in hiring are rising alongside major airlines' plans to introduce new aircraft this year, expert opinions remain divided regarding the resolution of accumulated personnel backlogs and future market prospects. Consequently, it is an urgent time to move beyond mere training to ensure an appropriate supply of manpower and establish social measures.
