I've owned both. I've tracked both. The E46 is the better one IMHO. I remember getting into the E92 and saying you got to be kidding. Every next generation just loses something. I remember getting into the F80 and saying no fckin way I'm getting this.

You can't go wrong with either. The 46 just looks so much better though. It looked better 10 years ago, it looks better now and it will always look better.

This is my old e92 god I miss that car. All the work done was done while I had the car. Gearbox map, stage 2 map, exhaust work etc etc

Have both, but hands down the E9X is better. 🙌 S65 makes me smile every time I downshift and rev match on track.

You need to get a plenum for the e92 it will make the intake sound incredible!

So I see many folks with these same cars commenting on here. That's so great! However I am a VERY poor man who works at an addictions outreach church but I still LOVE motorsport and driving! So I've had to figure out a way to get my hands on these cars or something basically very close. I bought a 2002 330CI which had a blown engine and been parked after over 220,000KM. So it's now been swapped out with all the drivetrain and interior from a 2006 M3 Competition which had been rear ended and written off. So now I have as fully swapped out aE46 M3 equivalent which I can still insure as a 330CI bu is really a 63,000km E46 M3 manual with everything needed to rock the driving experience! Total paid once all built but before all upgrades and maintenance "$6500.00". Then I had to do the rear sub frame and vanos remove the cats put in headers change the shifter to a chassis mount etc. So I spent at least another $10,000 getting it up to spec. My other cars (For big power speed and insane racing (But mostly for draining my wallet LOL) is my 2008 335XI. I bough it with a dead High Pressure fuel pump bad front wheel bearing and the turbos were on the brink. I paid $1500 for it. Now after years of work and Mods etc it's cost me probably close the $15,000. But it does push 730HP on 40% E85. FUN! Lol. And that's the cheap way and the best I could figure out how to drive these dream cars IMHO.

My brother had E46 M3 when I was 17, she was my first love. Years of dreaming of owning one, had a really bad situation, have money and you can buy E46,E92 and F82/80, chose to buy E92 M3 manual but definitely, E46 M3 is the car you have to have also, these two csrs are more than enough together

Owned both. Sold the e46 & now own a box fresh 2013 e92 6MT with 19k miles. For pure emotional enjoyment, the e9X M3 is absolutely peak M3. It isn’t the fastest, but it definitely hits in the ‘feels’ the hardest.

For all the talk about how "heavy" the E90/2 M3 is I think the real world differences aren't that much vs a comparably equipped F46 M3.  My E90 M3 slicktop with MT and lightweight wheels had a corner balance weight of 3510.  Most E46s slick top MT M3s are in the 3350-3360 range, so it's really less than 5% of a weight difference ( a full gas tank vs empty is about 3% weight difference), but the E90 M3 can carry four passengers very comfortably.  Also on a racetrack the E90/2 M3 is a considerable step up in capability stock for stock.
