Remmick wasn’t trying to convince anyone that anything in The Bible isn’t real. He doesn’t really care about religion. He was simply reminding Sammie that he is just like him. Europeans showed up, committed genocide and then forced traumatized survivors to convert to the one true faith. Lather, rinse, repeat. He knew the prayer because he was forced to know the prayer. They used the same blueprint on us in Africa, in the Philippines, the Caribbean, India, Natives in America. It goes on and on. Ireland is basically the OG British colony. He was reminding Sammie about the difference between actual spiritual faith vs simply memorizing words. In a perfect world, Remmick would be just another person facing an existential crisis.

After slavery, Black ppl in the South still had to eat and have shelter. Many worked as sharecroppers on the same plantations that they worked as slaves. They would work the fields in exchange for very low pay and board. They generally would be paid in “plantation money” which would be specific notes that were only recognized on the specific plantation at the   ”store” that the plantation owner would run. They would have to buy their food and supplies at an up charge from the plantation owner. Sharecropping phased out in the 1950s but was replaced with tenant farming.

The story actually implies that Christianity is not the answer. In some “traditional” vampire lore they are demonic so you’d expect Sammy to to say the prayer and for removing to go up in flames or to not be able to touch him but remmick saying it along with him says that that god isn’t going to fix his problems. Sammy was reluctant to religion the whole time because he felt that his Dad wanted to use his ability too, that’s why it flashed between the preacher and remmick. Delta slim told him the truth that his music was a gift/ability through his heritage that is more true to their people than the religion they were forced to adapt. And that power, not Christianity, was what was shown to work. Annie’s roots worked on smoke keeping him alive pre movie and keeping him human when stack tried to get him in the end. Annie figured out they were vampires and how to kill him based on her training in traditional medicine, lore, culture, magic, ancestral connection, whatever you wanna call it. Those beliefs is saved Sammy in the end. The guitar saved Sammy so the blues that they try to to discourage us from making saved Sammy when the god they tell us to turn to in times of trouble would not. It’s a celebration of heritage, indigenous, knowledge, practices, and beliefs. Sammy chose the blues and “sin” and he got what he wanted in the end so the message is not a condemnation of his “sin” or a thing to uplift the church.

Sammie didn't let go of the guitar because he realized his gift whether for Good or Bad. He has a choice of repercussions or fruit from decision making.

The actor that plays Sammy his name is Miles Caton. He is  a music prodigy that learned to play the blues guitar two months before . filming his very first role in sinners. His family are well-known gospel singers.  Miles was also a backup singer for the artist known as H.E.R.. She recommended him for the role...

using twins was supposed to represent symbolism, emotional impact, and storytelling.     Smoke and Stack are two halves of a whole they represent different ways of dealing with trauma, violence, and survival. Having them be identical twins reinforces those themes, Ryan Coogler explained he wrote the characters as twins to explore identity and brotherhood and it also allowed Michael B. Jordan to give two distinct performances in the same film

"Why they both have on red and blue like they bloods and crips?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm dead lmaooooo

30:28 - I didn't realize until now but Cornbread was blocking the doorway so it was actually perfect timing for asking to let her inside

1932 was time where black people weren’t slaves anymore.. but they were paid by white people in money that was only good on the plantations. It was there way as keeping us as slaves even though we weren’t anymore and making sure we couldn’t leave.

Every time I watch this movie I understand why Michael B Jordan won the Oscar. He played Smoke, Stack and vampire Stack. What a performance.

If you only have a biblical perspective of this movie, you miss so much. There’s significant African (and African-American), Irish, Indigenous, and Chinese historical, political and spiritual influences as well. It makes the story so much richer and nuanced. No one is completely a sinner, except for maybe the Klan.

“Picked Poor Robin Clean” was a blues song written by a Black woman (Elvis Thomas and Geeshie Wiley) and has been added to and chopped up for decades. The vampires’ performance was a bit stiff and cold. It pretty much illustrates what cultural appropriation usually looks like. That same song has a completely different feel and perspective song in its original style.

Because of segregation in 1932 Mississippi the Asian couple have two stores one for the white side of the street and one for the black side of the street. The wife handles the white side of the street. Her husband handles the black side of the street.  Along with blacks Asian men were also discriminated against as well and  that's also why the daughter had to go get the wife to discuss making the signs for smoke bcuz the husband is not allowed on the white side of the street as an Asian man...

He didn’t steal the dice. He was using loaded dice. They’re manipulated to always land a certain way. He was cheating and therefore stealing.

The fact that Sophie clocked 14:52  her tea within seconds✨ my grandmothers family was mixed race and Native ❤

Sophie started holding her breath two minutes in looool

I think you both need to study sharecropping and the great migration a bit.  This went on until the 1980s.  Some people alive today were sharecroppers.  It will make the movie make more sense.

6:45 You're mostly correct. Yes, Chicago was different from the Mississippi delta. However, to this day Illinois STILL has some of the most documented "Sundown Towns" in the country  🌇. But again, you're right, the Midwest and North were better for black folks. Emmitt Till was from Chicago 💙

the vampires had some of my favorite music in the movie

In 1865 the slaves were freed. But by the time 1932 rolled around these people needed jobs and the only ones willing to hire them was the ones who used to own them. It was a wild time
