I never realized Chazz Palminteri not only starred in this but wrote it based on his experience as a kid.

Chazz Palminteri who plays Sonny wrote this story based on his real life. He made it a play and starred in it himself. The play was a huge hit and and movie companies wanted to purchase it and pay him big money for the rights to it, but he wouldn't budge when it came to his demands to play Sonny in the movie. He was broke but never gave in to offers of a million dollars until Deniro saw the play and offered to fund it and allow Palminteri to play Sonny. Chazz Palminteri's real first name is Calogero, so the entire movie is what he experienced as a child.

A NYC bus driver salary in 1960 was ~$100/wk or $5,200/yr.
Lorenzo was offered $150/wk to "run numbers".
$150/wk in 1960 is equivalent to $1,645/wk or $85,540/yr in 2025.
That's some GOOD money he turned down....

And, the $600 that Calogero made working the craps tables is equivalent to $6,579 in 2025.
It's also equivalent to 6 weeks of his father's bus driver salary.

Robert De Niro, as the director, pushed very hard to keep the interracial relationship in the movie, imitating his own life experiences. And we know how Robert loves black women 😉.

The soundtrack for this movie is insane.

Craps (dice) rules:
If you roll a 7 or 11 - you win.
If you roll 2 (snake eyes), 3 (ace deuce) or 12 (boxcars) - you lose.
If you roll 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 - you roll again... until you get 7, 11, 2, 3 or 12.

Such a great, wholesome, underrated gem from the 90s. Robert De Niro did a phenomenal job for his powerful cinematic directorial debut, you can see the influence of his long time collaborator and friend Martin Scorsese. Chaz Palminteri also did a great job in creating this autobiographical screenplay with such authenticity,, humor and profound life lessons on loyalty, family and wasted talent.

The scene where he tells C the guy that owes him money is out of his life for $20 saved my life my brother's and so many others. I still use that line to this day with kids in my neighborhood. Real useful life lesson.

Chazz Palminteri really has such a commanding screen presence in this film and his other roles that he stared in the 90s, including The Usual Suspects. His advice for C is so effortless and endearing, just making sure that he doesn’t lead C into the more volatile parts of his mafia dealings—much as C is shaped and surrounded by it. This is such an incredible movie that Robert DeNiro really highlights and paints given his childhood and connection to urban life in the 60s and 70s.

Chazz wrote this and performed this as a one man play for years before it was made into a film... It is one of the best films within the Mafia genre..

I would like to think that Lorenzo realizes that if C had listened to him and had stayed away from Sonny like he told him to, C would've probably been killed with his friends. The irony is Sonny was trouble but kept his kid out of trouble for the most part. C was raised well but he was stubbornly loyal to those crap friends of his. Sonny knew how bad they were and I think helped keep C level headed. Anyway, I really love this movie. Everyone did such a great job.
