Quick note: I use these 90% of the time, but above threshold pace, I prefer something less fruity that goes down quicker. So I may not use them on short races. This is just my preference. Have a wonderful day, and thanks for watching!

On my long trail runs i eat whatever i come across. Some egg from a birds nest. Ants, worms or even a squirrel on really long runs. The money i save is insane!!

Another benefit of making your own gel packs is that it looks like you are sucking down a blood bag while on a run

One more disadvantage of the commercial gels is the trash (in case it bothers you).

I just buy bulk Maltodextin and Fructose and mix in 1:0,8 ratio

A friend of mine told me recently that he eats only dates while running. I've always used gels but I gave it a try yesterday on a 2 1/2 hour run. I felt great the whole time on dates alone.

Applesauce is relatively fructose dominant. Adding maltodextrin or corn syrup increases the glucose fraction and can improve total carbohydrate oxidation at higher intake rates. I make my own and tolerate about a 1.5:1 glucose to fructose ratio better in 70.3 triathlons, but I’m also consuming much more per hour than what’s discussed in this great video.

Me out here just downing honey, maple syrup, dates and dried mango😂 People say candy like nerds clusters and gummies work well or even marshmallows!!

As a vegan, I really appreciate this. Going to have to give it a try! Thank you for all the tips.

3.5 oz reusable packets of maple syrup is 100g of simple sugars. no prep needed

I made the gel! A word of caution: my dates are a little candied. They have a little hard shell on them. Thaw your fruit first or the dates gets super cold and they turn into Little Rock’s in your blender. I had to abort mission and get the mix in the microwave to heat up then continue on. Ended up great, just took a minute to get there.

HydraPak also makes a 5oz soft flask that you can use (and reuse) for home made gels OR use them to carry 2.5 gels or 5oz of syrup (e.g. Untapped). Great tips and breakdown!

Doing my first marathon this spring and was just thinking of a way to save on gels! Thanks for sharing and love the editing style. The music is 🤌🏻

This is actually a good running tip. Thanks for the hint.
Money saving is one thing, but having to carry & trow away all the plastic bags, I'm carrying around is another. This helps balance the impact on the environment a bit.

Hey, man, I stumbled across this video and I gotta tell you, these are really great recipes. I have done several ultras, and I’ve been running for 45+ years. Your final products are a great idea. Good luck hitting your goals!

Amazing recommendation by youtube on this one. My 70.3 training is ramping up and I just begrudgingly bought gels online (couldn't stomach 4$ gel gel at the bike shop) and they ended up at 2$ per gel which is not bad. But I had no idea these reusable baby food pouches were a thing. Im absolutely gonna start making my own gels. Also I'll have to adjust the carb bites recipe due to my peanut allergy. Great video my guy

Oh crazy! I know you from your archery channel. I've been wondering about diy reusable packets, so this is perfect.

I have a trick it is the "pom-potes" in France, it's compote in gourds you give to child and you put agave sirup in it and make just your calcul for just quantity of sugar.
