Great tips! I totally love the idea of being flexible with your training. I am a middle-aged runner who is trying to get back into running from chronic injuries. Therefore, I have to increase volume way slower than what I want and I have to really LISTEN to my body.  I start each run never knowing exactly how many miles I am going to do or how long I'll be out for -- I just have to feel it out. One time I accidently ran 9 miles without even realizing it. The next time, my body had a temper tantrum at 3.5 miles. 😂

Totally agree. I've changed my long runs into time on feet rather than distance. It feels like a lot less pressure and so much more enjoyable. I am on my feet all day at work also, so like you, it's easy to hit 16k+ steps/ day, often 20k step each day. Hi from the UK 👍

I think you nailed it.  As I work my way to marathon distance I often watch videos about ultra and think it would be fun to spend a full day just running outdoors in the wilderness.  Maybe I make ultra distance, maybe I don't.  For me in the desert having enough water would be the problem - no getting water from a stream or lake.  So I'd either need to carry a lot of water weight, drop some supplies ahead of time, or come back to civilisation part way through.

I have been running inconsistenly for the last couple of years, due to my kid. now he is with me biweekly and my training just went downhill from there. i had high volume weeks of running and then close to nothing, because i was just broken in those weeks. i started biking at home, but it just didn't feel the same. then i started running with my kid to Kindergarden...and i was just devastated with everything. Work stressed me out as well and i was just tired all the time.
Your view on training changed my view on it and i have to adjust stuff....it is a shame, that no training plan will adjust for that and that is something else to manage, but yeah...so bit it...time on my feet is a metric i can get around :)

What's crazy is that just today I was debating with myself (out loud) whether I could continue my running schedule (10k + 21k + 42k each week) given that work has been getting increasingly busy.  Then this recommendation pops up, like an answer from the universe.
See, I've been religiously pushing myself to follow that schedule each week for about 6 months now, but recently I've been finding it harder to regain my energy.  My idea of recovery is doing no physical activity (and eating junk) between runs.  I've run out of local routes to explore, making it harder to stay motivated.  I'm also extremely introverted, which makes me all but dread running groups.

I tell myself that I'll get revenge on the 50k/1500m race I dropped out of (at 35k), but that's been looking more and more unlikely.

Suffice it to say, this video really spoke to me and opened my eyes.  Time, not distance.  Listen to my body during a workout.  Think outside the box for where I can squeeze in exercise.  Don't be so stubborn about going it alone.

Come here friend.... Sit next to me... It IS the time that is the issue. I have the motivation to clock all the time I would ever need. I just don't have the time to spare.

I think it was just for example but you cannot run 50 miles/wk on 13k steps/day.
